The carrying bag is actually perfectly suited for the mat. It fits well and has the product name printed on it. The drawstring has a locking button so it forms a loop (handle) for easy carrying.
Altogether I was impressed.
It's not the standard anti-static mat, that's smooth and flat. This has a very thin layer of padding (.5cm maybe) and a textured surface that provides you with an excellent no slip work surface (which is what I wanted). This mat is also very large 24" x 42", covers most of my work bench. Can easily lay down a large PC case on this and pull out boards and set next to it on the mat too.
Working on a water cooling system once a fair amount of water leaked onto this mat and it got fairly wet. Rang the mat out afterwards thoroughly and it's been fine! No loss in padding or functionality.
For the price you won't find any other anti-static mat near this size!
Eclipse 900-114 Static Mat - 48" X 24"
Notice how it has grounding cable that can be attached to a metal object to ground the mat. I bought mine from my local Micro Center for $29.99.
It's very large - do the measurements before your buy (there are smaller mats available from the same manufacturer if you want).
It's probably designed for tech folks, I am not one of them and am not familiar with that else comparable is on the market. Still, I am fully satisfied with this one for my domestic needs (rare repairs of home computers/alarm systems/photo cameras etc.)
It gets firmly in place. The surface is uneven (corrugated with small squares) which is helpful to keep the smallest parts e.g. tiny screws on it firmly in the place where you put them. Big parts e.g. the laptop you are working on, are obviously similarly fixed on it.
I am not sure how anti-static it is (a few reviewers say that it's not, which is probably true) but this arguably doesn't matter. It's true that if you work on some precise equipment, you must exclude the static electricity at all levels. For the working surface (e.g. a mat) it would probably be enough to use some electrical resistant materials e.g. a wooden table. But if you want to fully exclude the statics, you at least have to ground your own body e.g. by using an anti-static wrist. Hence, it wouldn't be so much concerned (or so much reliable) on the anti-static features of this mat - at all.
The side effect is that after using this mat, your fingers get "sticky". This stickiness feeling probably means it's indeed covered with some waterproof layer (though I didn't test slobbering anything on it). Not yet ;)
Otherwise I am fully happy with it for my domestic needs.Read more ›

Good work surface, generous size. No electrostatic grounding that I know of but should be okay. Price was good comparatively speaking. Smells bad.Published 24 days ago by PS
