I was told by a friend that the "dumb" pinout defaults of Apple and Android charging systems is not the same. Perhaps that's why this works great for Apple but not for me.
I should have bought the right thing and got the Anker dual-socket USB charger instead. It has a "Smart" communication between the power supply and the charging circuit on the mobile device using the true smart USB power-negotiating protocol.
This charger was the same price as the "smart" Anker one but I was wishing for a device that didn't stick out that extra inch which makes it hard for me to get past the power port in my dash when I try and sneak in to the driver's seat of my minivan from the back like when I get in from the curb side of the road in busy traffic rather than go in the driver's door.
I suppose it is time to bite the bullet and put in another cigar socket in the top of the dash by my phone mount. Then I won't need this super-flush mounted lighter adapter that seems to only charge iPhones/Apple devices at full power but not Android
However last week when I started the car up, and plugged in my bluetooth headset to charge, I smelled burning plastic and looked down to see the USB unit smoking. Pulled over and shut off everything, unplugged the charger which was burning hot and sure enough, it was fried. Not sure what caused this, I only had one thing plugged in and it started smoking right away and I still have the smell of burnt plastic in my car.
The company's customer service contacted me and offered me a replacement product, and after I declined they offered me a different product of equal value. Great customer service!
Good: It charges fast and has a better "flush" profile than most other chargers.
Bad: It does not stay in the socket. It will come out with the cable if you tug on it even slightly. Poor design on that part.
Work around: I took a small bit of electrical tape and stuck it on the black side in between the two metal connectors on the side (but only one side not both) and it stays in now very well and the electrical tape doesn't bunch up. Tape on one side causes just enough friction to keep it in tight but it can still be pulled out as it should be designed.
Now I have no problems and can charge without the risk of pulling it out.
I am going to be using this for a motorcycle, so my first course of action is pulling the assembly apart. #2 negative is no fuse where one would be in a slightly more expensive charger. This is a pretty large negative, as a fuse will prevent the board (which I assume has no safeguards built in) from imploding - and possibly taking a device with it. Spend the couple more bucks on better quality.
I'd return it if it were worth the effort but it smelled so bad I just pitched it in the trash.
