Top customer reviews
The D520 has all the marks of a quality flashlight:
-The finish is very good, no uneven, crude surfaces, cheap materials, etc.
-The circuit board looks tidy and the diode is perfectly centered (on low quality flashlights you often see off-center diodes and messy circuit boards with solder all over the place).
-The lumen output is not ridiculously overrated. It says 1000 lumen and I believe it’s probably fairly accurate (could be 8-900 but it’s still not that much off, compared to cheap crappy flashlights that claim 5,000 lumen and in reality only put out 500 lumen).
-The threads are very well machined and came oiled, along with the o-rings.
Another good sign is that the flashlight came with TWO good batteries (2x16850) even though only one is needed to power the flashlight, and a set of spare o-rings, plus a lanyard. In general I notice that the attention to small details (like including some spare o-rings) is something that often is absent with really cheap flashlights.
This flashlight is built like a FREAKING TANK, I’m not kidding! It’s got a nice weight, and it’s as simple as you can get. It doesn’t have a switch (which is something that could always potentially break) and instead relies on twisting the head of the flashlight to turn it on and off. You screw the head all the way in, the battery makes contact and the flashlight is on. You unscrew it a tiny bit and it’s off. This is the kind of flashlight that, as long as you have batteries, it will work, no matter what!
The thread between the head and the body of the flashlight is protected by 3 o-rings that came pre-oiled. A lot of people don’t realize that rubber needs oil or lubricants just as much as leather and other products. Without lubrication, rubber seals tend to dry out and lose the ability to provide a perfect seal. When it comes to keeping water out, this is especially important, so make sure you occasionally lube the o-rings with something that is rubber-safe.
Now, the most important thing: DO NOT TURN ON THIS FLASHLIGHT OUTSIDE OF WATER AND LEAVE IT UNATTENDED! This is a scuba diving flashlight and it’s designed to be used mainly underwater. Because of this, it doesn’t have a heatsink like normal flashlights that are designed to be used outside of water. You can still use it as a normal flashlight for a short amount of time as long as you hold it in your hand. Your hand works as a heatsink and absorbs some of the heat. Leaving the flashlight on out of the water and unattended will result in the flashlight greatly overheating, which can be a fire hazard.
I tried using the flashlight to walk around at night and I was able to keep it on for 10 minutes without it becoming uncomfortably hot. It was quite warm though, it would have made for a wonderful hand warmer in the winter. Otherwise, when it’s under water, the flashlight doesn’t even get warm because the water just absorbs all the heat. If you need to drain the battery so that you can fully charge it, just turn the flashlight on and put in a basin full of water like I did.
This flashlight also uses a very warm LED so the light has a beautiful yellowish tinge, unlike the bluish hue of a lot of LEDs on the market. I would imagine that this would be better choice underwater, where there is already too much blue. One thing to keep in mind though is that the human eye perceives warm lights as less bright than cold lights, so with the same lumen output a cold LED will seem brighter than a warm LED. Just something to keep in mind, if you ever use this flashlight outside of water and feel like it’s not bright enough for 1000 lumen (but it’s plenty bright, trust me!). The spill is also quite good, and the flashlight illuminates a pretty large area.
I used this flashlight for a few days, and left it underwater for 24h without any issue. Obviously this flashlight is designed to withstand way more than that, considering that it’s rated for 150m. I doubt that I will ever able to test it at the limits of its performance, but I can tell that this is one RUGGED little flashlight. Whether you are an actual scuba diver, or you just want a flashlight in your camping or bug-out bag that will work no matter what, this flashlight will not disappoint!
