Top Customer Reviews
To help with your decision making process, I am splitting up my review into two sections
SECTION ONE : Experience of Using the Sofa
SECTION TWO : The Buying process.
SECTION ONE : EXPERIENCE OF USING THE MASSAGE CHAIR
The pre-configured modes are "Healthcare", Relax,Smart, Circulation , Neck and Shoulder, Back and Lumbar, Full Air , Heat. open up the panel and you can focus on just the neck , shoulder etc. A standard massage is 15 minutes with timer option to extend if needed; I usually do it for 30 minutes. You can fine tune your Massage to do more shiatsu, kneading, swedish, or Rolling , all of them doing a fine job; again rolling is my favorite.
You can chose between Zero Gravity position or sit straight. Initially it feels odd to have your leg lifted up and the sofa moves to a curved angle, but Zero gravity is a great position to get a good massage. The intensity , Speed is all adjustable. while the neck, shoulder, lumbar have the rollers, Calf muscles, arms, and feet have air pressure massage only (no Rollers). How do you call a product contemporary? Add a remote to it . Yes, this one has too. You are sitting on the chair and the controlling panel is next to you , makes no sense to have a remote.
EXPERIENCE SO FAR:
After some trial and error, settled to use Healthcare with intensity and speed of 4 that seem to knock out the pain points around the muscles in neck area of spine.I do it several times a week, sometimes just for 15 min and occasionally for 30 minutes . Rest of my family mostly use 'Relax' mode and once they get more comfortable might try out other options. The point is you have a massage that just meets your needs.
Tired after a long day of walking in mall, just open the panel, chose the calves, put intensity to 4 and spend 15 minutes; You think heat helps, try the 'Heat' Mode.Put the massage in relax mode, go to a zero gravity position and watch something on an Ipad or put some soft music once kids have gone to bed... Bliss !
WHAT IT WILL NOT DO :
The pre-requisite of modern civilization is bad posture; sitting in front of a computer for hours together. So if someone says I do not have any back issues, they are just ignoring the discomfort and pain. It is that prevalent. A bad posture of spine causes the muscles around the spine to tighten (google for paraspinal muscles) to protect the spine from further damage. A byproduct is the lactic acid accumulation. What the massage does is release the lactic acid , reduce the tension around the muscles . But since the underlying problem of wrong posture of spine is not rectified, soon the pain will resume until it is rectified by a chiropractor. Think of the massage chair as a harmless and expensive advil with no side effects.
SECTION TWO : THE BUYING PROCESS
I have been to chiropractor for neck pain and got some wins which I gave back once chiro was stopped. Since then Have been using the Homedics MCS-210H Shiatsu Massage Cushion for my upper back / Neck area. That one did a decent job for upper back but not much for the neck. My first experience was when I tried a fancy luxury massage chair in Costco Acutouch® HT-9500 Massage Chair and since then have been hooked on to buy a chair.
My first choice was Costco Chair but the roadshow had moved on and had to wait until 2014. Next I went to relax the back store to try out the Cozzia EC363E . Tried out the Inada Sogno Dreamwave Massage Chair, Black Leather which is the best in the market. But the price point was way higher and they had Cozzia , which is exclusive to Relax the back Franchise. I liked the Cozzia sofa and it also looked cool . The price was in 3k+ range ( + Taxes , white glove delivery and insurance ) that came to 3.5k. Upon investigation found Cozzia brand and Osaki was made from same factory in China and features are very similar but the price was almost 1k less online. So without trying it ordered them.
WHEN TO BUY :
If you decide to buy a massage chair, wait for the best time which is usually the black Friday until christmas . This is not buying a milk or Bread where you need it by evening . I got this massage chair from specialized e massage chair store including white glove delivery and 5 year part and labor for 2.8k . In most other stores prices ranged between 2.8k - 3.3k with delivery ($179-$199) and extended warranty ($249) additional. If you are buying from a physical store, add taxes as well.
WHITE GLOVE DELIVERY OR NO?
If you plan on putting the sofa upstairs, unless your cousin brother is a hulk, you are better off buying the white glove delivery . The chair is Heavy, filthy heavy even to push around. I put in the first floor but it needed 45 minutes of assembly required by two well built men. When they left my wife pointed that the arm was not assembled properly. So the seller sent the next set of professionals to fix it.
This is a zero gravity chair and total space needed will be similar to the space needed to put a treadmill. Decide the space and then order it. The chair is so heavy to move around (Magic sliders don't work)
INSURANCE OR NO?
The answer is simple. You need it. The chair is made in China including the microprocessor (computer) which is the brain plus several mechanical parts, air pockets.
We buy expensive TV's every few years without a blink . We don't mind leasing our cars frequently for no real reason. Your back has been carrying the weight of your son's college expenses; your mortgage, long drives to office. Your neck is showing the wear and tear of the long hours ,tough sales targets and many sleepless nights in office. Your manager might be dumping his problems on your back. This is an investment on yourself. The reason I gave 4 Stars is because there is no easy way for one person to move it. It might be heavy but the design could have incorporated moving as a criteria .
If you can afford, go for it.
I got the cream version and it looks great. I would suggest getting a white glove service to set it up. The chair is bigger than I expected and needs a lot of room, especially for the zero-g function to work. FYI zero-g refers to when this chair reclines and changes angle, which is great because it makes the back massage more powerful.
MATERIALS: The chair is leather with a metal base. The material is great but I haven't tried cleaning it yet. The chair is shipped in pieces and is solidly built, although I can't say I feel fully confident it won't fall apart when I, say, try to get out of it while it's reclined. If you use it for what it's meant for, then it should be fine.
SHAPE: I'm a young guy (24, 5'9 and athletic) and I fit fine in the chair. The only thing I noticed is that the fitting isn't really designed well; your arms will feel weird because there is a clamp for your shoulders and you feel like you're stuffing your hands awkwardly into the arm clamps. It's hard to describe, but I think they could've designed it better. For someone who is taller or shorter, the zero-g function will automatically adjust to your height so that is no problem (I tested this with other young adults, but not with kids. My guess is that it should be fine for anyone from 5' to 6'3). If you are overweight, there is a bit of space but it might be tougher.
AIRBAGS: The chair touts its usage of tons of airbags. There are airbags for your calves, feet, hips, back, neck, arms, and shoulders. The biggest con of this chair is that the airbags for the calves are VERY painful! I have pretty big calves but even letting my skinny leg friends use the chair they feel the same. It will squeeze your calves to the point where you feel like it's about to explode, and I have the bruises to prove it (yes, they are actual bruises). Other than that, the hips, feet, arms, and butt (?) airbags feel great. The neck and back airbags don't really do much, in fact they are pretty unnecessary but it's nice to see they tried to implement some.
ROLLERS: The rollers on this chair are pretty standard. I haven't tried many other massage chairs but comparatively these are rather weak. You can increase the intensity via the controller or using zero-g, but in general the sensation is pretty mild, which is okay because if you're sitting for extended periods of time something powerful might be bad. There are a multitude of options and some are amazing (such as clapping). The range of the rollers is a bit stiff: you don't really feel it on your upper back due to the padding and it doesn't go below your hip, which I wish it would because I've had previous rollers go to the gluts and that feels really good. They do scan your back before the preset massages to get a contour, but who knows if that actually does anything.
HEAT: This is actually a pretty useful function, especially in the winter. When I bought this chair I wasn't really expecting a heat option but now that I've felt it I think it should be mandatory for all chairs of this class.
FUNCTION: The massage chair have preset functions which do air + rollers and also localized options. The display is very informative and easy to use, showing you where on your body it is massaging. It allows you to control the power of the air and rollers, as well as the speed of the rollers. It also comes with a mini remote control which I thought was a plus, though I don't really use it. The arm that holds the control board up is pretty flimsy and will be a bit annoying to set in the proper place. It also makes annoying beeps at certain times. However, the custom massages are pretty intuitive and you can avoid calf massages completely so it can deliver a pretty customized massage experience.
OVERALL: This product is great! In terms of what it has to offer, it probably tops any of the chairs you'll see in the mall and also does it at half the cost, although IMO these things are already overpriced. There is a warning not to use the chair for more than 30 mins due to overheating. There is an annoying timer which will shut off the chair but you can always add time, and I've used it for more than 30 mins no problem. Also the chair is prone to electric surges, so make sure to connect it to a good surge protector (or just unplug it when not in use). The only real cons are the size and the overly powerful calf massagers, but if you think you can fit and if your wallet can afford it, buy this chair!
