Awesome. Awesomer. Awesomest! That pretty much describes the quality progression of David Pogue's series of Missing Manuals covering the Apple Macintosh's OS X operating system. He's written over a half dozen of the Manuals and each new one seems to be better than the last.

Mr. Pogue is popularly known as a great explainer and is developing a reputation as a great efficiency expert as well. The latest iteration of the Manuals covers OS X Mavericks (10.9) and is filled with examples, tips, and illustrations of how to be as efficient as possible using a Mac computer, as well as detailing and explaining nearly every feature of the operating system, both documented and undocumented.

I've read (and reviewed) every one of those books and have been delighted to learn dozens of new ways to use the system beyond just learning about the new features of each version of OS X. Pogue details the (usually) several ways to do things but nearly always offers a quicker, easier option, usually keyboard versus mouse-based. (See Appendix D, the Secret Keystroke List for 8 pages of shortcuts.) He has evolved his already Great Template for itemizing and explaining comprehensively the features, components, and technologies of each system towards offering more and more user perspectives, expert insights, and practical tips to being more efficient.

I don't know how much time or effort he puts into developing each book but it must be substantial. How else to find out about all of the undocumented features unless one either gets a cheat sheet from Apple or spends days (weeks? months?) Command, Control, Option, and Shift clicking all over the user interface to discover new and mostly useful things.

I usually get a “missing manual” for the current Macintosh operating system because I think these are among the best books available for those who like to know how their Mac works in general. This “missing manual” book covers just about everything anyone needs to know about using a Mac running Mavericks. If a person bought a new Mac for the first time, this would be the book to get to learn to use it. A person who only wants to know what is new in Maverick probably doesn’t need to buy a whole book if they are already advanced in using a Mac, but it doesn’t hurt to have this book around for reference when something comes up that the person isn’t that familiar with. Another reason to get this book is to discover tons of great tips that make it easier and more fun to use the Mac.

Right at the beginning of this book is a list of the main new features of Mavericks. For those who are interested mostly in that, it makes it easy to go look up more detail on the features they want to learn. For Mac beginners, you can learn everything about how a Mac operates starting with (for example) the various views—icon, list, date, column view and coverflow. David Pogue, the author tells you how each of those views can be helpful in different situations. You can learn how to burn CDs and DVDs, use the dock, and find out what each application does (that is installed with OSX Mavericks) such as Calendar, Preview, iTunes and so on. Networking, printing, sharing and iCloud are all covered. With 880 pages, you can imagine there is a lot of information.
David Pogue, one of my favorite Mac authors and New York Times tech columnist, always writes with humor and doesn’t use technical jargon to explain everything. It is easy to understand.

Never upgraded to Lion 'cause I didn't like the reviews. Mountain Lion? Nope. Then my wife got a new machine with Mavericks installed. HAD to upgrade my machine to keep up with changes so I can help her out of minor computer troubles. Still don't like Mavericks, but I can tolerate it having Mr. Pogue's book. I cannot imagine having a Mac without Pogue's book beside me. As for me I'd rather be running Snow Leopard or even Tiger, but we must follow along in Apples' footsteps.

I have been Mac user since the Mid 80,s and have purchased every one of the "Bible" and "Missing Manual" series.

I have found the books to be of great value have recommended them to many. This one is not only informative but the sprinkling
of humor here and there lights up the book.

I have skimmed it for content and am in the process of reading specific areas of interest.

One item of great interest to me was the author's promise to make changes to to the book after Apple makes changes to
OS X Mavericks.

So the first PC to Mac conversion manual I bought was not easy to use because it's on the Kindle and I have a difficult time "flipping" through the pages when I'm trying to track down an instruction.

To say this tome is comprehensive verges on understatement.

I don't think it's perfect for PC to Mac conversion for neophytes like myself. I look up a term or item I think is comprehensible in the index, only to find it is not there. I have to think in applespeak to locate things. Not an easy translation for me. If I persist, I can usually find that which I seek. When that fails, it's back to the internet and it's challenges as to who really knows what they're talking about or not?
