After returning a cheap plastic speaker switcher I bought from a well-known retail electronics store for $45, I decided to take a chance on a brand designed by a company that specializes in outdoor audio where speaker selectors are essential. My research paid off and I couldn't be happier. The build quality is very high, with an all metal chassis, solid volume controls that convey quality, and separate push button on/off switches for each speaker pair. It is the width of most DVD players and receivers, so it looks great in a rack. It is heavy enough so it doesn't slide back when you push the buttons.

You can also run two receivers into the unit, and separately control whether each pair is driven by receiver A or receiver B. The back speaker connectors are in three strips that plug in and out for ease of installation, especially in a rack. You can run the wires to the front of the rack, install the wires, and then reach around the unit and plug them in. The only possible drawback is if you have huge speaker cable, as I doubt 12 or larger will work. This unit is designed for an 8 ohm receiver output and 8 ohm speakers, unlike cheaper units that will drop the impedence to 4 ohms which will not drive many speakers. You can spend twice as much on one of those high end audio brands, or spend less and get a lot more features. A great deal for the money.

OSD shipped me the first SSVC4. One of the channels, channel 2, did not work so I shipped it back overnight at my cost. It sat for a week so finally I called and was told it was in but not checked in. I asked that they process the exchange soon since I did ship it overnight. The next day I received a notice from UPS that it had been shipped, ground. So, 5 days later the new one showed up. I installed it and channel 3 does not work. I really only need three channels and I'm tired of dealing with OSD so I have it wired to run on channel 1 (family room), 2 (Kitchen), and 4 (patio). Channel 3 does not work.

I would not buy from this company again, too much hassle.

I have an audiophile set up in doors including a very expensive "reference amp". Outdoors I only have a pair of Cambridge mini-speakers, a poor man's Bose.

Pros:
1. I needed a way to split output for indoors (A) and outdoors (B) that also protected from impedance mismatches. It worked well for this, including the ability to have different sound levels indoors and outdoors. I did no notice a significant degradation of audio quality.

2. I bought this for impedance protection because I was worried that my expensive system could be damaged by accidentally over driving with impedance mismatch. It works. My $2400 amp is fine.

Cons:
3. I agree with one disgruntled reviewer; it is extremely difficult to insert even 14 gauge wires in the back. This is a nonstarter for audiophiles who almost use the thickest, low impedance speaker wires they can afford. I only had to attach 4 pairs. The ones going outside were 16 gauge, so no problem. The indoor speaker wires were 12 gauge and I had to solder a workaround. The 12 gauge are short runs and I don't drive the system much, so it's working for now.

I replaced this with a different zone splitter that accepts larger speaker wires. But my sister thinks it's great. If you only have 14 gauge wires or thinner, then this product works quite well. It's a 4/5 stars for non-audiophile users with thin speaker wires. It's a 2/5 for audiophile users. The connectors alone tell you that this was not designed for them.

I purchased this product to be able to add a set of "b" outdoor speakers to my audiophile setup indoors and my amp/receiver only support one set of speakers. After reading a lot of reviews on this and other products I had high hopes for it with my system and it seemed reasonably priced and well-made. Unfortunately, this device did not work for my purposes, some of which was due to the product itself and some due to my own audio devices and setup, and I ended up sending it back. Here are my comments:

1. Instructions were pretty scant. I had to go online to figure some things out, especially as I have a pair of NHT high-end 6-ohm speakers I had to try and figure out how to install.

2. I had to open the case and change the jumpers. I only found out about this through forums, which is not a good solution. For an option like this, there should be clear documentation, at least on the web site.

3. Once I did get things working, the sound quality was definitely degraded. I was not happy about that.

4. I like how the product is made of metal instead of plastic; it seemed reasonably well constructed.

5. Attaching speaker wires in the back -- even with banana "pin" plugs -- is ridiculously close together. All the wires end up jammed together into very small openings that are adjacent to one another. I cannot even begin to think of how and why the company designed these this way -- it's VERY poor and difficult to use. There's almost no way you could attached bare wires of any better-quality gauge (14 or thicker) -- you would have to get (as I did) the smallest pins you could find, attaching them to each wire, and then cramming them together into the spaces. You can see this in the photo of the product. Can you imagine getting wires into each of those connections? Awful!!

Bottom line, I cannot recommend this product, which is very disappointing because I really was hoping it would work.
