I set the pulley up so this holder was resting on the subframe of my vehicle. I then slid on my 4-foot cheater pipe onto my 1/2-inch drive breaker bar and was able to break the crank loose with no help, all while as the holder and pins held up just fine. I read some reviews about the pins bending, so when I was installing the holder, it appears (on my Toyota V6 5VZFE motor) they need to be tapped in further. They definitely go all the way in, in my particular case.

I have a 2002 Toyota 4Runner that this was instrumental in getting the timing belt changed with. It is a universal tool with many different applications and works very well.

-Pros: comes with several tips (4 sets eg. 2 sets with tips that have nubs for preventing slippage, and 2 sets with smooth barrels. 2 sets are thick barrel shafts and the other two are thin.) My 4runner has a pulley that is torqued to over 200 ft lbs and this worked well to get it on and off. You can simply replace a broken tip with an appropriate high strength bolt. This is by far and away better than the manufacturers recommended specialty tool for holding pulleys or other objects that rotate in place. All of my mechanic friends want one after seeing it in use.

-Cons: It could be significantly more versatile and strong with a little modification.

Explanation of the Cons section: After 6 times using this on a pulley with the thick shafted smooth barrel tip at over 200 ft lbs the hinge pin proved to be slightly weakened and I did break a single tip. The weakened hinge leads to the extension arm being able to slip out of the hole; movement enough to the point that I had to enlist a friend with a 5 foot cheater bar applying body weight against the side of the pulley holder to keep the pins inside of the pulley. The pulley in particular could not support the pins with nubbed tips so I was forced to use the smooth barrel tips. Any slippage of the arm applies excessive stress on the tips held against the pulley, and with smooth barrel tips there was slippage. Pressing the pulley holder against the pulley manually by using a cheater bar (a long steel pipe braced against the ground and the pulley holder) was enough to get the pulley on and off multiple times, however after the 6th time used at such pressures the pulley holder arm flexed a small amount, stressed the tip, and the tip sheared. The issue is that the arm is able to flex in 150 ft lb applications or higher. It needs more lateral strengthening to press against the V-section of the pulley holder so that torque is not incidentally applied to the tips of the pins while inside the pulley. I did ultimately break a single barrel tip (at approximately 230 ft lbs), but found a replacement bolt that worked just fine to finish the job.

My recommendation to the manufacturer: It would be very nice if there were a couple more locations down the length of the shaft of the pulley holder where to screw in the tips. This would allow more flexibility in applications where access to pulleys etc are very limited. I would also suggest thickening the steel by another 4 mm and using a stronger hinge pin as well. I believe this would make it a 5 star product.

I used this to remove crank pulley bolt on 1996 Toyota Avalon. There were no 8mm1.25 bolts included which I needed. I tried with the included dowels and one of them broke. It held fine with bolts but bent the bolts. I used black and also grade 8 bolts both bent. I think the metal dowel damaged the outer threads too. I would buy again because I may use it for the cam pulleys another time. For this car there is a better model specific holder available the same price as this universal one. I wish I had that one. Also I did not fully tighten the bolts to the pulley, I will check the length I need to just go through the pulley and not stick out the backside. I will use washers and keep the tool tight against the pulley to avoid bending bolts. Also I had to use a clamp spreader to hold the tool's arm perpendicular to the pulley.

I needed a way to hold the crank from rotating and the camshaft pulleys when I was replacing the timing belt and water pump on the 5VZ-FE engine in my 2001 Toyota 4runner. Ordinarily I would have gotten the tool from my local Autoparts store as a rental, but they stopped carrying it since not enough people knew how to use it.

Instead of using the included pins to hold the crank, I used two M8x1.25 bolts to hold the pulley in place. It took a bit of work with the bolt being under 217ft-lbs of torque, but it worked by fitting it beneath the frame rail when loosening it, and above the frame when tightening it. The tool did bend the moving arm a little bit, but held it together. I also was able to use the largest pins to hold the camshaft pulleys in place when removing those to replace the seals behind them. The only real issue I ran into was the fact that he pins started to get loose after a while so I had to keep re-tightening them.

Overall, it is a pretty good tool, and cheaper than the competition. I would recommend it if you need to hold down large pulleys instead of fabricating your own or using a 2x4.

I used this tool to perform a timing belt service and to replace the camshaft seals which requires the removal of the camshaft gears/pulleys in my 1998 Toyota 4Runner with the 3.4L engine. It worked great for all three pulleys (two camshaft and one crankshaft pulley). I was also able to use it to pull off the harmonic balancer/crankshaft pulley as I did not have a puller for this task. I don't recommend this as it was not built for this, but it worked beautifully as a makeshift puller to avoid having to ride my bike to the parts store to rent the tool and was an added bonus for buying the tool.

Crankshaft pulley holder (used in place of factory J-8614-01 tool)

I purchased this tool to remove and reinstall the crankshaft bolt from the crankshaft pulley of my Isuzu Rodeo (Honda Passport). AllData instructions for changing the timing belt recommended tool J-8614-01 to hold the crankshaft pulley from rotating while you remove the crankshaft bolt. I found the factory recommended tool online for $292 from a site called Denlors Tools. This universal OTC tool sold by Amazon comes with universal pins to fit different pulleys, however, the supplied non-threaded pins kept slipping out of my crankshaft pulley holder holes when I tried to apply 123 ft lbs to the bolt.

To fix the problem I purchased two M8x1.25 bolts that fit my crankshaft pulley. My crankshaft pulley holder holes were corroded so I cleaned them with the proper thread tap first. Using threaded bolts with the universal pulley holder made the job MUCH easier. I uploaded a photo to show the tool attached to my crankshaft pulley.

It did the trick but still seems to need a 3rd hand to hold in place. In our application the crankshaft damper/pulley has to be held in place while bolt (very high torque) was tightened to spec. As pulley in our application did not have threaded holes to otherwise adapt a conventioal holding tool, this "universal" tool straddled the three spokes. It was a 2-man job even though we had direct pulley access in this case. Application with more limited access may prove challenging. Wished the tool hooked on a bit better to prevent slippage; but otherwise the tool did the job.
