Let me start off by saying that with many purchases over 3-4 years since I created my amazon account this is the only review I have ever written. The reason is this tool performs very well! It is a universal tool so it may not fit your application perfectly, but on my 05 Mazda 6 2.3 it worked wonders! I have spent the past week trying every method I could think of! Hammer, pickle fork, gear puller, propane torch, penetrating oil, and even my BFH. Nothing and I mean nothing made this ball joint want to come loose! Once I got this tool I was skeptical because it seems heavy duty, but seemed poorly put together with how it had gaps between the top and bottom jaw. I lubed up the threads with anti seize and started cranking away. I cranked it down as hard as I could with my 1/2" ratchet in very limited space and gave the bottom jaw a tap right below the joint and it popped right out! To do the remaining 3 ball joints it took less than 5 min. Each popped out with little effort. This is a must have tool as I have spent many times in the past week kicking my feet and calling my car every name in the book! would highly recommend!

Good Replacement for Pickle Forks and Sledgehammers

Nice little tool and a good way to get ball-joint or tie-rod end studs out of steering knuckles. Reading the many reviews makes me think a lot of folks don't really know the best and safest way to use a tool like this. Two points need to be made. First, when using this tool, do not completely remove the stud nut, merely back it off a couple of turns, if you can do that and still get the tool onto the end of the stud. Second, bring the tool to a good level of tightness, then give the knuckle a sharp rap with a hammer by the stud, which should cause the stud to pop loose. Doing these two steps will reduce the chance of injury and cause less wear and possible damage to the tool.

First time I used this to pop a ball joint on my GV, I didn't think it was going to work - I removed the nut, inverted it & replaced it to protect the threads, positioned the tool and torqued it down, the joint would not budge - my wife came outside and called me to lunch, so I left it, all torqued up, and during lunch we heard a "bang" out in the driveway - the joint had popped loose.

I've used it a number of times since then, tie rod ends, ball joint, almost anything with a taper - position the tool, torque it down, and then whack the side of the arm (not the tool) with a hammer to shock the joint, it'll pop loose.

Wow- excellent tool! I had to replace the drive shaft on my wife's '06 Odyssey. This job entailed disconnecting the lower ball joint from the knuckle in addition to other tasks. I greased up the "cup" part of the tool and the threads and it slipped right in between the boot and the lower control arm. I had the castle nut upside down threaded back on to protect the threads of the shaft. The finger part of the tool rested right on top of the shaft. A few minutes of tightening and pop! the ball joint was loose without any damage to the boot. I've never had an easier time separating a ball joint before- and believe me I had some real problems in the past. It was almost expected that I would replace the ball joint because I would end up tearing the boot. In my philosophy if a tool is successfully used once it's paid for. Well OTC you guys really made the grade. I think anyone needing to replace or remove a ball joint should get this tool.

Not designed well, weak materials

Compared to models of this type and price and the one I got that kind of worked, this thing feels small and looks kind of poorly cast by the seams and such down the sides but the main bolt may appear sturdy but in reality the amount of force this thing is supposed to take for it's intended purpose the bolt is not as meaty ad it should be, not to mention the end of the bolt that contacts the seperator is a shiny chrome, fixed in place, ball bearing almost? So it never makes square contact and pressure, because if the slick vast material the moment you start actually tightening it down the bolt will drive to the sides or straight back as it's a rounded surface on a slick surface trying to make square and stable contact straight to one point, that part of the design is awful in my opinion, couldn't keep it straight no matter how hard you try so even tightened to hell there's not much on the joint all of the pressure and energy is lost and wasted by this thing torquing and twisting itself all out if wack and not pushing square on anything. Not to mention putting any elbow grease on it and really tightening it(as square as I could get it) bent the center pivot pin into an actual bow shape and curved the entire bolt as well so was trash after one attempted use and didn't even budge the joint. Overall just not built up to enough quality or strength standard to handle the amount of forced required for it's intended purpose. Plus poor design of main bolt makes the function of the tool basically not even achievable so honestly get something a little more expensive, you don't have to go crazy but this cheap is too cheap for something that needs to be that strong

I'll addaa picture of it next to another one for comparison of how anemic it seems in every way

Outstanding Tool & Customer Service, DO NOT USE an IMPACT GUN w/this tool

I used this tool to remove & replace some stubborn lower ball joints on an old Toyota Pickup. The ball joints were stubborn enough that torquing down the tool was not enough to dislodge them. What worked for me was using a heavy aluminum hammer to hit the control arm where the BJ seats, with the tool torqued down, and together it was enough to dislodge these old BJ's. Without this great tool, I don't know how I would have got them out.

It's important to note that you SHOULD NOT use an impact gun with the tool. It can damage the tool and void your warranty. OTC (a Bosch subsidiary) also recommends cleaning and lubricating the threads after each use. I actually broke the jaw pivot pin at the end where the bearing detent is located. I was still able to finish the job since the pivot pin was still long enough to extend all the way through the hinge. OTC's great customer service took care of me and replaced the tool free of charge.

Overall I'm very pleased with the tool, and OTC, and would buy more of their specialized tools in the future!

Great generic ball joint separator!

It worked well when I used it. However, on my car (E39 BMW) the stud of the ball joints were rather big and long. The tool had JUST enough room to slip it onto the end of the stud. Luckily the tool allows you to adjust between two pivot points which allows it to be used on smaller and larger ball joint studs. It did slip off a couple of times when I started tightening the screw because it was still on a slight angle relative to the stud so I had to maintain horizontal force on the tool to prevent it from slipping off the stud. Once it nears perpendicularity though, all the force from the tool is straight down into the stud. At that point, it's just a matter of time before what sounds a like a gun shot will go off and you'll think that you broke something when if fact it's exactly what you wanted.

If you can find a tool like this specifically for your make (Honda, Toyota, etc.) then I would recommend that. However, this is still a great generic tool that I'm sure works on many cars.

Hard to get used to the harsh snap when the joint pops free because that is usually the sound of something that just got broken. However, that is also the sound of success that makes for light work.
