After installing the drivers in all three of those cases, I didn't get speeds any faster than I had with my built-in wireless card. After installing the Realtek drivers from Realtek, I decided to poke around and discovered what I think was the problem all along.
You need to force the adapter to only use 802.11ac.
As soon as I did that, bam! My speed more than doubled. Problem solved. It's possible that the manufacturer's drivers will work, I just ended with the Realtek drivers. Since it's working, and without the utility, I am going to leave everything as is.
I have attached four screenshots to this review to help you locate the place where you set the adapter to use 802.11ac in Windows 10. These settings should exist in prior Windows versions but in a different place.
First, make sure you have installed the drivers and inserted the USB WiFi adapter. It wouldn't hurt to reboot after installing the drivers and before continuing to these next steps.
1 - Open SETTINGS. Pick NETWORK AND INTERNET
2 - Pick CHANGE ADAPTER SETTINGS (see screenshot)
3 - Right-click on the Realtek USB adapter, pick PROPERTIES (screenshot)
4 - Note that I have disabled my built-in adapter by right-clicking on it and picking DISABLE. You should too.
5 - Select the CONFIGURE button (screenshot)
6 - Go the ADVANCED tab, pick WIRELESS MODE, in the dropdown menu on the right, pick IEEE 802.11ac.
7 - Click OKAY to apply and close the window.
You have now told the adapter to only use 802.11ac. I don't know why it doesn't automatically pick it when in auto mode.
IMPORTANT: Once you set it to only use 802.11ac, it will only use 802.11ac. If you are connecting this to a laptop you travel around with, this may not be a good idea because it won't allow your laptop to connect to other types of networks (e.g., 802.11n). 802.11ac isn't widespread yet (in August 2019). This change is great if you keep your laptop at home. If you travel, you will have to manually set this back to "auto."
This worked for me and has remained effective for the past few days, I have been getting very high speed. I can't guarantee this will work for you. Do this at your own risk. Pay attention so you can reverse what you did if you need to.
Good luck! Hope this helps!

But these slowdowns do happen several times a week usually during a heavy downloading period. BUT...that being said, I still HIGHLY recommend this unit! You cannot beat it for the price.
My wifi modem is on one end of my home while my PC is on the other end so the signal, considering the distance, is still excellent! Will most definitely purchase again (or an updated version if available) if and/or when I need another one.
So to get a five-star rating from me I would have needed a download link in the printed documentation or in the listing (not in a review, because then you would have to go through pages of reviews to find it). Also the printed document looks like it was produced for Ant Man, the text was so small. Once I was able to transfer the files on the mini CD over to a thumb drive, I was able to set the manual aside and not worry about it. NOW, the PDF manual included in the electronic files ALSO should have included a download link for current drivers. So, while the experience of getting everything setup was not painful, it also was not as easy as it should have been. And at some point, I'm going to need to update the drivers.
To keep the current four-star rating, the adapter needs to show some staying power, and I can't speak to that yet; we just haven't had it long enough. But I'm hopeful. BTW, I specifically selected the USB network adapter without an external antenna, because the target computer is close to the router, and directly one floor above another computer that connects to the router wirelessly -- I didn't want to take any chance that the competing signals would cause a problem. They don't. So far, I'm pretty happy!

Plus: the seller is so cheap that uploads the driver on a file sharing server. Today when I wanted to download the driver I got this error message: Bandwidth Exceeded
This link has been temporarily disabled because the sender is out of bandwidth

Now I am out of luck to download the driver and get the thing working. At least for now...
------------------------------------
I have had the unit for a few days now. The delivery time was reasonable. The installation process was also easy. I downloaded the drivers from the website. Due to some reason, the download failed a few times midway and had to redownload the file until I succeeded. After a few days of use, I can say the speed is very pleasing. I actually get close to the nominal speed of my internet plan from the bedroom with about at least 5-6 meters away from the router and a thick wall in between. I am happy that I purchased this because I can use 5 GHz on my relatively old laptop and don't have to deal with network interference with neighbors typical of 2.4 GHz signals. I used to be very frustrating at peak hours bringing my wifi to its knees but not anymore. I didn't give it 5 stars only because the size of the dongle is actually larger than the impression I got from the photos. I have another dongle for my wireless mouse which is less than half of this. The reason this bothers me is that a protruded dongle is prone to damage. Will update if anything changes.

Since the primary reason for getting this was to improve the streaming on Kodi, I'll give it five stars because it did the job with no hassle at all.

- So, after some thoughts, I bought this wifi adapter dongle. I received it this morning, and installed the drivers. The product description has the website where I went to download the zip file with the drivers. The package comes with a tiny manual, but it looks like it is useful only if you have Windows Vista (people still use those??) and Windows 7. I have Windows 10, which means all I had to do was install the driver and that's it.
- After installing the driver and restarting my computer, I plugged the dongle in. Went to my wifi settings, and now I see a second wifi option which says "Wifi 2". I went there and connected to my router's 5G signal. I just did a speed test and now I am getting 65-70mbps download speeds. So, this tiny dongle basically almost doubled my Internet speed in my computer. I think this was a $18 very well spent.
