Not the Best OS Course I Have Taken

If you buy these courses, start by watching both DVDs as an overview. During this initial phase, try many of the command, but do not attempt to fully understand any. On the second pass through each course, I recommend using three windows. The first window is for the DVD videos, the second is for the "bash" shell, and the third is for taking notes. As you are confronted with each new command, skimmed through the online "man" descriptions, and played with the command until you feel comfortable with it. In this way, the information will takes days of hard work to complete. It is also tiring, so expect to take a lot of breaks.

The UNIX command language, as presented by Mr. Boris Vinnik, is mostly a collection of utilities, each with numerous parameters. The information is useful, but the presentation is jumbled. The first course starts out with ample explanations on every topic, but as the course progresses, there is acceleration to the number of commands presented each minute.

Throughout the video, Mr. Vinnik is always shown standing against a gray background, and moving his hands about. The commentary is not always in sync with his lips, and sometimes gets ahead or behind the examples. The examples are blurred video taping of a screen, as Mr. Vinnik types in the commands. It is what can be expected from an enterprising person who produces and markets his own product. It looks amateurish, as compared to courses developed for in-house use by most American companies.

If you are a beginner looking for a general overview of UNIX commands, then it may not be a good investment. An alternative description of how UNIX works is "UNIX for Dummies", which costs only $15. The book will give you a working knowledge of UNIX. Mr. Vinnik's courses cover more System Administrator information, but I think it falls way short of what would be needed to do the job. I base this on having maintained VAX VMS, and CDC Scope operating systems. However, to be fair, my training took several weeks for each operating system. Mr. Vinnik has crammed his twenty years of knowledge into less than four hours of video.

Don't waste your $$$$$$

Number one - the DVD doesn't play right!! Why in the world they decided to make it in .mp4 format is beyond me! They could've made it a DVD video so you could watch it on your tv & follow along with the computer! But no, they had to make it .mp4 so you have to use a computer just to watch it & the files are terrible! It comes with Quicktime, which I installed & it never worked right! I also tried using Nero Showtime, a Divx player, 2 different versions of Windows Media player with an .mp4 plugin, & had problems with all of them!! The computer would constantly lock up, the sound & video would be out of sync, blurry video. This DVD is CRAP!!! I even tried copying the files to my hard drive & playing them & still had the same problems! I have a fairly new, fast computer with 1 gig of RAM, so that's NOT the problem. It's extremely hard to consider someone a "computer guru" when the DVD they put out doesn't work right!!!!

Other people have mentioned the "accent". I work with people of all different nationalities & I still had a hard time understanding Boris Vinnik at times, even with repeated listenings. When the information is so critical this can be a problem!

Definitely NOT WORTH THE MONEY!!! I can't stress to you enough how dissatisfied I am with this product!!!

Decent for a beginner but not worth the money

I just finished up the course and overall it was disappointing. I'm an experienced Windows system administrator who is trying to learn UNIX. After reading the reviews and not finding many other UNIX training options (besides books), I purchased the DVD set. After completing the course, I wish I hadn't bought it for the price. I tend to agree with another reviewer that many of the reviews are fraudulent. Now that I've read them again, I can see a pattern of grammatical mistakes (makes you wonder, could one person be writing many of these?). Overall, the DVD course just isn't that immersive and the production quality is poor. The content is so-so (for an entry level UNIX student), which is the only reason I gave this 2 stars instead of 1, but many sections are way too short.

The first DVD (UNIX Essentials) is decent but the second one (UNIX Core) is fairly vague and is far from the "more advanced" content I was hoping for. I've gotten a lot more from a UNIX CBT (by instructor Mark Virtue) than this set, and wish I'd found it first. Boris doesn't give clear examples in the course, and half of the time he mistypes commands (and sometimes just closes the prompt and forgoes the example after doing so). Going back to the production quality, there might as well not be any video of the instructor as after the beginning of the first DVD all of the segments are dubbed (his voice doesn't match the video of him talking)! Again, decent effort here but it's not worth the price as there are cheaper, better choices out there.
