I bought a new mid-2012 MBP 13 and installed an OCZ Vertex 4 256 Gb SSD (see my review of that product). I had nothing but problems with formatting and other issues, such as crashing on sleep/wake. After much troubleshooting, I determined that the SSD was the source of my problems. I returned it and replaced with this OWC drive. I was able to format the disk, add a recovery partition (the OCZ would not permit), and load my system via Time Machine. Everything worked flawlessly. Some folks speculate that I needed a firmware update, but why should I do that with a brand new SSD? I own a Mac, not a PC.

Love this drive. It is my second, and I will stick with OWC. They understand Macs and provide hardware that is compatible with Macs. BTW, some folks thought that the OCZ would be a faster disk. Someone stated that they get 10-sec boot times on their MPB (2011 model). I consistently get 9 sec from button push (before optical drive sound) to login screen. That is good enough of me.

BTW, shop around. OWC sells their own drive for considerably less($320) than Amazon ($475). I think that there is a pricing problem with this listing. I expect that they will change the price after reading this review.

My 15" early 2011 Macbook Pro's logic board died recently. I got it back repaired from Apple, and decided to use this time to upgrade the hard drive. I bought this drive and the OWC data doubler. I moved my stock 5400 rpm drive to the optical port using the data doubler, and put the Apple Superdrive in an external enclosure.

It is LITERALLY like I have a new computer now with the OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6Gas my main boot up drive. Boot time went from 1 minute and 45 seconds to 17 seconds! The computer does not heat up at all when I play HD movies stored on this drive. I use my old 750 GB stock drive as a data drive and keep OSX and applications on my SSD. Programs like Word and Excel launch INSTANTLY now. You'll get longer battery life because there are no moving parts.

I did the research and was down to this drive vs. the OCZ Vector 3; both drives had similar specs. I chose the OWC drive because OWC is a Mac shop and makes its products to run perfectly on Mac OSX. Do this upgrade and don't even think about it.

EDIT: Do NOT enable TRIM on this drive in OS X using Trim Enabler or any other patch. I spoke with OWC tech support and was told that this drive has built in TRIM support and enabling TRIM in OS X with a software patch would actually deteriorate performance.

I purchased this for my late 2011 MBP. I installed it in the macbook pro(much easier on the newer bodies than of days of old when you had to remove a bunch of stuff) and used a usb mountain lion thumbdisk to do the partitioning and formatting and installing of 10.8 mac os x (which worked like a charm). My MacBook Pro now screams!! What I like about OWC is the fact that are making their hardware specifically for Apple Products.. and with that you get top notch equipment and the best functionality you will find. If you own a mac of anykind, you can do no wrong with this 300-400$ upgrade. For those wondering, I bought a USB 3.0 enclosure for the disc I swapped out of the mac, to which is now my iPhoto and Music library disc.

Put the 3G version of this in my MacBook Pro. Found it to be too small so I replaced it with another larger SSD. Since then it gets used a few times a year for photo backup. This year, 2 days before a trip and 4 days before the warranty expired, I found it had failed. I had no time to call OWC until I returned from my trip about a week after the warranty expired. They were absolutely unyielding and would not honor their warranty -- which is their absolute right since I called just over the line. But, is this the kind of company you want to give your hard earned dollars to?? While it worked, it was fine.

UPDATE (shortly after the initial review): apparently their president saw a warning I posted on their site about the strictness of their warranty policy and instructed the CS people to call me and make it right. The person who called said given the fact pattern in this case they would make an exception and bring it in for warranty repair or replacement. While this should have happened at first contact I have to give them praise for such prompt corrective action and will no longer hesitate to buy from them in the future

My MacBookPro took over 1 minute to boot. Now it boot's in 10s. This was one the best upgrade ever. Do your research... thera are some SSD's that are very slow. Mercury Extreme Pro has lots of advantages over other brands and models.
