Doctors fasting lab test Friday: 93Contour fasting test Saturday: 91Lancet was practically painless and this is my first time owning a monitor. This kit is great and has more than you’ll need for a long while.
This is the most basic and reliable system ever - I used it 25, 23 and 20 years ago to monitor gestational diabetes (three kids all born at normal size - success!), and again 25 years later when diagnosed prediabetic and prescribed a different monitoring system that was more expensive and just did not work. I was so happy to see that this trusted system was available, I ordered one out of pocket to use with a tracking app (entering data manually helped with learning), and within half year succeeded in bringing my H1AC numbers down to nearly normal range, from the uppermost (!), in addition to losing weight and eliminating a lot of inflammation and other issues. This month, I ordered two more - to place in a purse, and in my office, in addition to at home, to make it easy. This system is consistent, reliable, and economical. Short of putting an intelligent implant in your arm that gives you updates all the time (!), or the half-intelligent ones that try to that don’t work, this system works for having something basic, trustworthy and effective.
I am very happy with the meter. It's small in size, fairly easy to use and the controls are simple enough to learn. I am new to monitoring sugar so I don't have backgroung experience to draw from. I just got this out of concern that I might be becoming prediabetic and I wanted to keep an eye on my blood sugar without having to go in for a test. A couple times I have gotten unusually high readings, and once even with the control solution, but that has been the exception rather than the rule, and it could be due to my technique, however I don't have an explanation why I got a control solution result out of range - one time only so far. This happened immediately after getting an usually high blood test result. Retesting the control immediately again with a new drop of control solution gave an acceptable result, so it may have been something contaminating the control solution where I placed it.
While the meter does require very little blood, one does have to learn how to judge the amount needed, and the dome shaping of the blood droplet appears to be important so that the the test strip is able to draw up an adequate amount. You can't work with blood that spreads out flat on the finger and seeps into the finger print furrows. With my improving technique I find the results seem pretty reliable.
I don't think the finger stick tool that accompanies this meter is as well designed as it could be, which is way I am rating 4 rather than 5 stars. In particular, the need to manually remove the snap on cap top with a hard pull in order to insert, and then later remove the lancet, seems badly thought out and asking for an accidental finger stick. There should be an easier way to remove the cap that doesn't rely on a snap in method. Screw on, slot on from the side, etc would be much better way to do this in my opinion. Also, of all the steps involved, I thought the lancet tool was the most unclear and required the most reading of directions, which had to be hunted down in a separate insert. On the positive side, the lancing device does have a nice spring loaded hammer mechanism which is nice for those who would rather not be the one to have to push the needle in. This tool allows use to let the it do it, you just hold it against your finger. The lancets that come with this tool are nicely thought out, with the needle cover serving as a way to cover the needle after use, you just press the lancet into this cover on a flat surface and then release the lancet from the tool into a container.
The associated software GlucoFacts BTW the way is junk. It clearly was not designed for the Mac and has one of the crudest user interfaces I have seen in a long time. It also requires a custom cable that is very expensive and which also will not work on my Mac. The software is not influencing my rating on the meter, I just add this for comment.
This truly has everything you will need to start regularly or occasionally testing your blood glucose. You may want to additionally buy some mini alcohol prep wipes, but of course, washing your hands will do just fine as well. As far as I can tell, mine is accurate within 6 +/- mg. I did a couple repeat tests to see if there was a difference. The meter is simple to learn, and the lancing device easy to use (though if you have arthritis or limited mobility in your hands, I would probably suggest a larger lancing device). As far as replacing the supplies, I've been to several stores, and truly ordering online via Amazon and through other companies that go through Amazon have been the cheapest. For example, at Walmart 50 test trips were $38 alone. Yikes! I just bought 100 online via Amazon for $22. Overall very good product, and love that it came with a pouch which makes storage and portability easy.
I am not diabetic but have an inclination that my blood sugar is off sometimes and just wanted a way to be able to test on my own. So far readings have been correct based on the control substance that comes with the kit and how I am feeling when I test. This has been very much worth the money and has answered many questions for me. As a plus the meter will store readings. I'm glad I looked into this meter.
Received the Contour Next EZ test kit and was happy with how easy it is to check your glucose levels. Took a fasting check the next morning and level read 106. One number over upper limit but nothing to panic over. Next morning checked again, 106. Checked again after eating lunch. 106? every glucose check after was 106. The meter is obviously not working. Had blood work done at my hospital lab. Glucose 93. This unit is trash.
