I had a bottle of perfect wine (55 degrees F) and opened it, poured a nice glass of wine, and put the bottle in the OXO Steel Wine Chiller.
I love a nice Pinot Grigio.
One glass down...took awhile, as I had it with dinner. The bottle in the chiller sat on the table (house was at about 70 degrees F). Dinner lasted about an hour.
After dinner, I poured another glass while watching a movie. Wow, the wine was still chilled (57 degrees F, according to my infrared thermometer).
I drank that glass down, and an hour later, when refilled, I found that the wine being poured into the glass was definitely colder than the wine I just finished.
At this point, I forgot to test the temperature. Don't blame me--blame the wine.
Well, that third glass emptied the bottle.
So, I can say that over the span of 2 hours, the wine stayed at a nice even temperature in a non-chilled container. I was surprised!
And I slept really well that night.
I will likely use this outside during patio parties and picnics to keep my already cold bottles ready to serve, but it is basically a holder more than any type of chiller or "sleeve" product. One feature that I do like - no condensation rings on furniture as the interior cushions and catches that moisture. I'll keep looking for an actual chiller!
I have now used the Chiller on two occasions and must say that it does exactly as promised. I never really went beyond the ninety minute point, however, as we are not a household to nurse an open bottle of liquor for any length of time. So I'm not sure how long the actual insulation would keep the bottle at optimum drinking temperature. The OXO Steel Wine Chiller, therefore, gets passing marks for succeeding at what it promises insofar as my experience goes.
I'll be honest, though. I'm not sure how much usage this will get in the long run. I'm a romantic by nature in terms of presentation. There is something about chilling a bottle in an ice bucket that appeals to me (although admittedly it is messier) for more formal presentations. For something more casual, I have no problem just keeping the bottle of wine in the refrigerator. Maybe to take wine on an outing, this would be useful. But it seems a bit fancy for that as well. For my taste, I like the Wine Chiller but I don't know how much I'll actually use it. KGHarris, 4/13.
For keeping wine cool longer at the table without having to use an ice bucket, I've had my best results with a Rapid Ice Wine Cooler Silver. I just keep it in the freezer and when I open a chilled bottle of white wine, I slip the sleeve over it. That wraps the bottle in a layer of cold without getting it wet and helps keep it cool all through a leisurely dinner.
Of course, if you have a modern decor, this product is much more attractive on your table than a bottle in a wine sleeve, but when it comes to food or wine, I'm more influenced by results than appearance.
This is a nice, good-looking, small wine bottle holder that has a few characteristics that keep me from giving it more stars.
I notice first of all, that Oxo has changed the product name on Amazon to OXO Steel Wine Sleeve, from OXO Steel Wine Chiller. Good on ya, marketing, as that is a lot more accurate than the original name.
As mentioned in tons of other reviews here, this is more of a temperature...maintainer, or at least increases the amount of time that it takes your bottle to reach room temps.
Not a chiller AT ALL.Read more ›
