Making cucumber salad, an apple tart or a potato gratin? Try the OXO Good Grips Hand-Held Mandoline. Use the soft knob to simply adjust to the desired slice thickness, and slide the food over the stainless steel blade for perfect, even slices. A clear surface shows slices accumulating below. Slice on a cutting board or plate, or hook the soft foot over a bowl. A food holder protects hands and covers the blade when not in use.
Blade is very sharp.Always use the food holder to prevent injury. Do not leave within reach of children.

Tip: The mandoline is quite narrow so I angle the potato to get longer slices. I hold the potato with my hand but when it reduces down to about 1-2 inches thick, then I use the hand guard. All one needs is common sense when using this product. I've never had problems with the food getting stuck under the blade and never cut any of my fingers even once.
Overall, I'm highly satisfied with this product. I have a food processor with a slicing attachment but I don't want to mess with the food processor unless I cook for several people. Too much stuff to clean up. This mandoline is perfect for cooking for two because it's so easy to handwash. 100% recommended!
The blade is sharp (my husband has a planed pinky finger scar and an interesting party story to prove it lol), the product is relatively durable, and I've had no issues with the guard grips. But, and this was the deal breaker for a higher rating, the slices are uneven. The thickness selector bar's locking mechanism is one sided, so with the natural pressure of slicing, comes a "give" on the side of the slide surface opposite from the lock. Because of this, slices come out wedge shaped, no matter how lightly you try to slice. So if you want to make potato chips, you end up with half moon shaped chips with an extra brown thin edge and a softer thick round edge. Also as others have said, the first and second thinnest settings are so sheer, they don't really get used. If they made an even plane on the food instead of a lopsided one, they would be perfect for vegetable chips, but all I get is a tissue paper thin wedge sliver.
So all in all, not a bad purchase to see if it will be a gadget you actually use, but if you will, you'll likely end up investing in a better mandolin and giving this one to charity.
The only drawback is the food guide/holder is worthless. I've tried a couple of different vegetables and nothing fits well. I tried to get away without using the food guide, and I sliced the tip of my finger off pretty quickly. I have bought slice resistant gloves to prevent another cut.
I like how simple it is to use and I see using this more often than just making specialty dishes like ratatouille or sliced cucumber salad.
