This thermometer stores its probe inside and wraps the cord around it. Therefore, it does not make a mess in the drawer. Also, the cord is wrapped in a rubber instead of the metal on traditional thermometers.
The meat doneness is available in USDA or Chef's preference (note, you should always use the Chefs setting). The timer function is easy to use and can count up or down.
Like always, OXO has taken a traditional kitchen product and greatly improved it.
Unfortunately, I left my OXO thermometer a bit close to by 600F grill and it melted. It looks a bit less pretty, but it still works.
I turned the unit on a day or so later and it appeared to have corrected itself. I tried it three more times. The first two it worked fine and the third it was back to being way off. Bottom line is the unit is unreliable at best.
This update is log overdue. About a year ago I contacted OXO and told them the problems I was having and they sent me a replacement. The replacement unit worked as described and continues to work today. Turns out the temperature probe was no good. Decent customer service and apart from time it didn't cost me anything.
Broke after a few months usage. Would have otherwise been at least satisfied, would not recommended, nor do I plan to repurchase.
For the money I'm positive I'll find better.
1. Put it in the oven (the probe, the main NOx stays out of the oven)
2. Set either a minimum temp or the type of meat and desired doneness
3. Hear the alarm go off in another room.
It's too expensive for this to happen and there are not any replacement probes. I'm usually very happy with OXO products, but stay away from this one.
I guess probe duration is an issue but so far so good. I've never put the probe in the dishwasher (don't know if any of the others did). Just clean it off and wrap it up. I can see over time that the wrapping it could put a break in the wire in that you have to pull it pretty taut to get it to wrap around enough.
Every meat thermometer I've ever owned has had the probe break sooner or later. Typically sooner. One to 6 months is typical (Polder are you listening?). This one is over a year now.
Just wish OXO sold replacement probes.
Well I have to say. This instrument is spot on! So much so that I didn't believe it when it said my turkey was done 30 minutes earlier than the standard 20 minutes per pound rule I've always heard on the cooking shows. I'm so glad I trusted it. My turkey came out perfect, juicy and tender. If I'd left it in that extra 28 munutes, I shudder to think of the rubbery mess I'd have had on my hands.
You want this, particularly if you have a new oven, are cooking something new or don't roast large cuts of meat every day... trust me.

This is our second one of these and it is as efficient as the first that we left outside in the rain. Always gives a quick accurate temperature reading for properly cooked meats.Published 6 days ago by CAnewbie
I've tried probably 3 or 4 other leave-in units. Every other one, except the OXO, failed when the probe accidentally touched a hot surface. Read morePublished 7 days ago by Amazon Customer
I have used this twice and so far it is working great on big 2 - 5 lb beef roasts. Both times the bell ringed to remind me to take out the roast. Read morePublished 12 days ago by Joef96
Don't waste your money! I bought a $37 spoon roast and it was ruined because I trusted in this thermometer. What a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!Published 22 days ago by MOLLY MCKENNA
I like the product overall, good for indoor cooking. Reason for the 2 star review is is that it's not good for outdoor grilling as the cord to the temp sensor is plastic and melts... Read morePublished 1 month ago by Matthew W Panning
What good is a well designed product if you can't repair it over time? They don't offer replacement probes so eventually you'll have to buy a second one. Read morePublished 2 months ago by bk
Use it in my smoker so I don't have to open the door to check meat temps. I usually have the smoker in the 150°-200° range and so far the casing on the probe lead has held up fine. Read morePublished 2 months ago by S. Johnson
I have had this thermometer for years now. I love it! The company stands behind their product also. I was cleaning the probe one day (a little to hard mind you), and I broke it. Read morePublished 3 months ago by sd92104
