Turns out its fine for my daily coffee grounds, banana peels, etc. and takes up much less space than the ginormous pot I had been using.
It's not an 'air tight' seal like a gasket would provide but the ring of the lid is complete (no gaps) and it fits snugly when closed. Not sure if an ant could even get inside but time will tell.
All in all, I like it.
I added some pics for scale
Just noticed my pics are gone, not sure why. Added them back. Let's see if they stay this time.
To wit, the inside surface is seamless and the walls join the floor in a curve, so very little matter get's stuck in the bottom and it rinses easier. The tab on the front edge of the hinged lid allow you to add to and dump the contents without touching a surface containing waste. The lid's hinge permits the lid to travel past 180 degrees and sticks in place at it's full travel for dumping. The seal of the lid is loose, so you don't run a risk of splashing or flinging gunk when you open it. The lid is also removable at the hinge, so getting the pail and lid under the faucet for rinsing is eased. I've found the shape of the pail to be ideal for fitting under my sink while having a relatively small footprint. Lastly, the handle is adequate for even a child to use.
I was initially suspicious of the lack of venting or a filter for odors, but if you empty the pail at the end of the day, it never smells, so save your dough and pass on the expensive stainless steel products.
I'm extremely critical of product design. This is how products should be made, and while $20 might seem like a lot to pay for potato-peel pail, you really get what you pay for.
Edit, 2013-06-13: I've seen this product selling for two-to-five times retail price. If you're paying more than $19.99 for US domestic purchase, you might be getting swindled.
We have been composting for years. For a time, we used a wire bin attached to the inside of our kitchen cabinet door and a plastic bag, but emptying the dang thing was a mess, and the fruit flies!!! We'd tried using a variety of re-purposed buckets and bins -- Tupperware type, cat litter or paint buckets, large jars -- but there were always drawbacks - lids were too difficult to pry or twist open, or the containers were too tall to use easily (I'm only 5'1", so reaching up to fill a tall bucket often led to strain at best, and a strain and mess at worst!), or else they were too bulky, unsightly. I wasn't ready to give up composting, but wanted a better solution.
I saw this OXO version and read the reviews, and thought, why not try it? (It kinda went against the grain for me, as I tend to prefer recycling/re-purposing items as solutions for daily living, so this was a stretch for me.) Seriously folks, this bin is amazing! We love that the lid is so easy to open, even with one hand (or the ridge of my hand if I have a double handful of waste scraps), yet it seals sufficiently to keep odors and fruit flies away! It's as easy as pie to carry down to our outdoor compost area and dump the scraps - no more drippy, smelly bags that leak from the kitchen to the final compost pile, and no more bulky buckets to haul out. The bin is sturdy and secure, yet super light and trim -- and tidy; no more drips!
I used to spend quite a bit of time and effort cleaning that bucket we used to use, and I just assumed that was always going to be the deal with composting. Not true! The curved, smooth, seam-free walls make dumping out the scraps a breeze, and then - back in the house - cleaning is a breeze because there are no crevices to have to scrub! The lid detaches, making it even easier. OXO has engineered a near-perfect product with a specific purpose in mind - that I didn't even know I needed till I had one!!!
I do agree with so many other reviewers who complain it's a bit on the small side - we need to empty it daily -- sometimes several times in a day, depending on how ambitious I have been in the kitchen. OTOH, I really like its small footprint and that it actually looks nice! We set ours up in one of the compartments in our double sink, where it's out of the way and very convenient. If OXO ever made another that was perhaps taller and only minimally larger in girth, I would certainly be tempted to "upgrade" to that, but for all its conveniences, I'm happy with the one we have right now.
