Does not work on pickle jar
Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2020
I have a similar item by pampered chef that is still great after 10 years. I was hoping to buy this oxo one for My mom. It does not work! Tried it on a jar of pickles and the teeth just slipped, stripping paint off the lid. Then tried with my pampered chef one, and it worked fine. Was hoping to find a lower cost alternative to pampered chef. This isn’t it. Photo attached, the pampered chef one has straight sides and more and smaller teeth. Also the teeth on the pampered chef one are kind of zigzag like shark teeth, Not just one sheet of metal teeth straight in a row.

This is the first OXO product I've been dissatisfied with. Unfortunrtely, this jar opener is useless. I purchased it to replace an old OXO jar opener that I've had for years, but has somehow disappeared . The old one had "jaw teeth" on both sides, but this new one has the teeth only on 1 side. The other "jaw" is polished metal, so it has zero grip surface. Even moderately tight lids will not open with this device. It slips long before the lid moves, no matter how hard I squeeze it. I asked my neighbor, a younger very athletic man, to try it, and the same thing happened. He squeezed so hard he thought it may break, but the device slips, and the lid does not turn. He was easily able to open the jars with only his hands. We experimented a little, using less squeeze-pressure, then more pressure, but nothing worked. Jars of olives from the fridge would not open. Jars of honey would not open. Mason jars would not open. This device is useless, except maybe as a paperweight.

I had an OXO opener before and I loved it. This model is VERY is different and VERY bad.
One side of the jar opener is smooth and the other side has teeth. It slips and does not work. The one I had before had teeth on both sides and it worked beautifully. I returned it.

I love oxo products, and I am so disappointed in this one. I read all the reviews about how easy it is to open jar lids and I ordered it. An injury requires me to have help with doing that right now. But it doesn't open hardly any jar lids! It's hard to push the v-shape onto the lid hard enough to make it grip, and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to the type of lid it will or won't open. The gripper pad to hold a jar on the counter is really of no consequence. You know how jar lids are! Some of them are easy, some of them are nearly impossible. This opener just plain doesn't work and now it just takes up a lot of space in my drawer. I'm very disappointed.I truly need a jar opener right now while healing from an injury to my right arm. I don't understand why so many people find this to be a helpful product.

Simply didn't work. Teeth slid and scraped jar lids but would never "bite". Maybe we got a lemon?
Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2017Verified Purchase
I read all the good reviews about this gadget. But when we received it simply did not work. The teeth would not grip any of the lids for any of the jars we tried it on. They would just scrape and slip on the lid no matter how hard we pushed the jar into the wedge shaped area. Many reviews suggested people with severe arthritis might not be able to use this but we are young and able bodied and the device simply would not work. I have had good experiences in the past with OXO products and for this reason I had chosen this tool over the other highly recommended jar opener I found on amazon. I was sad to find this would not work for us on any jars. I do half wonder if we got a lemon and most of these work and some don't. I really can't say. But rather than try another one, I'm going to test out the other jar opener I found on amazon instead.

I wasted money on this, I admit. It takes incredible INWARD force to keep the jar lid gripped and trying to turn at the same time. This is not of any help! OXO usually makes a good product at a fair price, as this is, but not a good product! If it had one side soft rubber for lid grip, and the other side metal teeth, as it does, it would work great. This has one side smooth metal, the other side metal teeth. It is of no use. Don't waste your money if you have limited strength and/or dexterity.
It is interesting, if it had my recommendation with one side soft rubber, this would work great with minimal effort

Will be short on this one - no time for sugar coating the story.
I am 45 YO and could not open the very first jar I tried. It scratched the lid quite nice.
As title says, I bought it for my parents who are fairly old- this item is a complete joke

The photo shows how much wider the gripping area is in the original gripper (notice the pen easily fits in the groove). The new model cannot hold the pen at all.

I have the original one and wanted another one for vacation rentals. This one doesn’t open jars easily at all! It’s made cheaper and the remake has a thinner gripping area, so the “teeth” tend to make cuts on the lids, and does not loosen them. I’m very disappointed. Why change the original design that worked so well?

Very good

This product seems quite sturdy. The grip is quite comfortable and as someone who has used the triangle version of jar openers (sans handle), I would imagine that the grip here would be more comfortable for people with poorer wrist mobility or pain. Delivery was very quick.

The jar opener you need

This is the jar opener you need. The shape gives you great grip and fits most of jars and bottles. Also, comes with a rubber base to put the jar on and prevent them to move while you opened

Terrible product that doesn't work well and no return policy
Reviewed in Canada on December 20, 2019Verified Purchase
I bought this for my mother who has a hard time opening jars. When she told me that she wasn't sure if she was using it properly (because it didn't help her at all), I tried it for a few days and I quickly realized that it was actually easier to open a jar with my bare hands than using this. I think it's a terrible product and when I tried to return it only a few days after the delivery, it said that this product was not eligible for a return (next to my order on Amazon). I have ordered a lot of things from Amazon over the years but I have never seen this. I'm very disappointed and I highly recommend purchasing another product because this is useless.
