UPDATE FOR RED HANDLED USERS: In hindsight, having a "two piece" corer does have a drawback. If the "pieces" are NOT touching when one Cores The Apple, then there will not be a complete 360 degree circular "cut" and there might be a problem removing the core. The package does say to "twist" (rotate) the corer prior to removal, and a circular motion would certainly ensure the "cut" was a complete circle. *BUT*, as the sides of the corer aren't super sharp (a good thing) "twisting" the corer on especially Crisp Apples might result in the corer getting stuck when you try to twist it while fully inside an apple - Even *IF* the two pieces are pressed together.
...I just came back to update the update as a few moments ago I was "twisting" the Corer to remove it from the Apple, and it BROKE (sadness). The spring came off and one of the two pieces that held the spring in place came with it. :(
....back to the review, but I'm joining the 784 smarter people who bought the BLACK one...
I suppose the main difference between the Black Handled One and the Red Handled One is that The Red Handled One has a spring inside the handle which you hold in your closed fist while forcing the corer through the apple. Then release the pressure on the handle and the core drops out. There doesn't appear to be a good side view picture that shows the spring, so will try to tack a picture on later. I decided to give this model a try as it seems one should be able to make larger holes (if necessary) by adjusting the width of the two coring parts by letting up pressure on the handle. The corer being split into two parts should make cleaning easier, but if Bits o' Apple get into the spring I suppose the best thing to do would be to hold it under a faucet to get the spring clean. It is also listed as "dishwasher safe" on the packaging.
(hint - get the Black one)
I thought the larger handle would make the peeler unwieldy, but it actually provides a grip that gives me more control. The blade also allows me to peel apples, carrots, potatoes, etc. quickly with ease.
The only thing I'm disappointed in is the plastic tip that definitely does not make removing potato eyes easier at all.
