To protect the wood of the reamer (or any other wooden kitchen tools, such as utensils or cutting boards), apply some mineral oil to the surface, and spread it around with your fingers, rubbing in the oil to make sure it is fully absorbed by the wood. Then, leave the reamer to dry. Apply mineral oil every couple of months or so. The oil protects the wood and protects it from drying out and cracking.
It can extract the juice to the point where what is left inside the
rind is virtually dry to the touch. Cleanup? All I have to do is rinse it
under some running water and "lightly" go over it with a brush, it doesn't require
soapy water and why would I risk drying out such fine wood with a soapy soak - a quick
rinse and be done with it. Nothing could be easier.
Here's a tip. I work the reamer over a cup or glass filled with water.
After you have extracted out the juice notice all that small amount of nice semi-dry pulp that
remained clinging to the reamer ribs? Don't waste that, simply dip the reamer into
that cup/glass of water and the pulp floats off easily into the juice contained water.
Wonderful product, outdoes any mechanical juicer for efficiency and cleanup takes mere seconds.
This little reamer makes the job so easy that I cannot believe it took me this long to get one. The fact that it's made of wood is nice too. It's easy to clean and nice to hold and use. In the end, this reamer is saving me money. I recommend it.
Added comment: I find the best way to remove juice from a lemon and or lime after hand squeezing as much juice out as possible is to use a Tablespoon to literally scrape out the juice and remaining juicy pulp. Turn the Tablespoon around and around and you will get every drop of juice out and not ream a hole through the end of the lemon or lime half.
The reamer is extremely outdated technology. It is very messy, spilling juice all over and getting your hands cold if the lemons came from the frig. There is lots of pulp in the juice, which makes cleaning the strainer a real pain. Reaming lemons is also the most labor intensive and tiring. You have to keep rotating the fruit to juice different sides. It also leaves a lot of juice in the lemons. It's cheap I guess and maybe better than just squeezing lemons using your hand.
A countertop manual twist juicer is much better, and a lemon press is much better than that. Don't buy a reamer.
