OXO’s three piece multi-purpose Funnel Set is ideal for transferring and straining soups, sauces, dry goods and more. Large and small funnels accommodate any size job, and the detachable strainer fits in both funnels for added versatility. Soft ribs on the neck of the funnels allows for a secure fit in all size bottle openings to prevent spilling, and the ribs allow air to escape so liquids pour in smoothly without splashing. Go ahead and pour steamy soup or hot fruit purees; the funnels and strainer are made of high-heat plastic. Soft handles on the funnels provide a firm grip, and the three pieces nest for compact storage.
With its generous dimensions and smart details, this 3-piece Good Grips funnel set from Oxo takes care of all kinds of pouring and straining needs. The set includes a 5-1/2-ounce funnel for small jobs and a 16-ounce funnel for large ones. A removable strainer works with either funnel. All pieces are crafted from heat-resistant plastic and are safe up to 250 degrees F. The funnels feature soft rubberized tab handles for easy control and vertical rubber ribs for a stable fit in virtually any bottle. The ribs also allow air to leave the bottle as you pour, cutting down on messy splashes. The funnels and strainer nest together for storage and are safe for the dishwasher. --Emily BedardSee all Product description

While the strainers are indeed versatile, due to the fine mesh on the 3" strainer it also put an incredible strain on my patience. I was considering quitting kefir making due to the time and effort required, but figured I'd give this OXO set a shot before I gave up on kefir completely.
The large funnel with the strainer is a complete game changer! Now gravity often strains the kefir from the grains for me, or a few quick stirs with a spoon will strain my thicker batches. The kefir routine has gone from a 20 minute chore to a 5 minute (or less) activity. I'm guessing I save an hour or two each week, not to mention the stress and headache.
The rubber strips are highly functional, keeping the OXO secure while I fill the funnel and wait for it to drain. The design of the strainer is also excellent. It locks into place and unlocks easily, making cleaning quick and hassle free. The "locking tabs" may wear down over time, but so far I haven't had a problem with the strainer coming unlocked even during vigorous stirring of funnel contents.
If you're just getting started with kefir, or have been doing it the hard way for some time (as I did), I highly recommend purchasing this set and making life easy on yourself.
As an aside, the nyolon strainer set is incredibly useful for other tasks, I simply wouldn't recommend them for kefir.
The advertising for these funnels that talks about the ribs that allow air to vent from the destination container is true, although they don't provide a LARGE amount of space between the funnel and the inside of what you are using for a destination. But the space they provide IS quite adequate for the purpose intended.
They balance well on the top of a destination container as they don't have a large handle on one side that would tend to weigh one side down. The small thumb-hold and the ribs for venting are made of a substance more like rubber than the plastic body of the funnels. Which makes them easier to handle. NO fumbling with THESE babies!
The outside of the funnels are a textured plastic which gives them the TINIEST bit more traction for handling them, while the inside of the funnels are VERY smooth and slick making for easier cleaning.
At first I was the tiniest bit confused about where the strainer was supposed to go or how it was supposed to work, and THEN discovered that in the larger of the two funnels are three small nubs that allow you to "snap" the strainer into place. These "nubs" are NOT present in the smaller unit. The strainer is very useful for straining the detritus of frying french fries from the oil they were fried in (or anything remotely similar that require a straining action) although the holes in the strainer are large enough that they allow SMALL particles to pass through. It would NOT work well for loose leaf tea ...
Dimensional measurements below were made with an electronic caliper and are approximate ... rounded to a single decimal point. ID = Inside Diameter, OD = Outside Diameter.
SMALL FUNNEL------------------------------LARGE FUNNEL
Large end OD: 4.2"----------------------------------4.5"
Small end (at the tip) OD: 0.5"---------------------0.7"
Small end (1" back from the tip) OD: 0.8"---------0.8"
Small end (at the tip) ID: 0.3"-----------------------0.4"
Overall, I've got to say that I am extremely satisfied with these funnels, as I think that all aspects of what a funnel should be and do have been well thought out and executed. Anybody not satisfied with these funnels is just TOO picky to live ...
If you're not using it for bale top bottles it does its job as a filter.
