As a ricer, this is well built, seems large enough, and works well. Any firm items must be cooked first (such as potatoes or carrots), and then fairly easily presses through with two hands. Obviously the smaller hole settings take more work than larger settings. It easily rotates between the 3 size settings, and sticks there so it doesn't slip out of position. The plunger that pushes food through makes a good seal (a good as I would expect), but not water tight, so a very small amount of potato ends up on the top rim over time, which you just brush off into the bowl. It is large enough that you have plenty of leverage to squeeze the food through. I can nearly do it one handed, but it is easy with two hands. It starts out a little firm, then easily squeezes once it starts pushing through. The hook to lay on the bowl edge works fine, except most of my pots are only just slightly deeper than this device, so you have to lift it up to squeeze so the food has somewhere to go as it piles up. So I end up just setting it on top of the pile as I fill it, which works well. Removing the outer plate when cleaning is easy enough, but takes a little wriggling back and forth. The plates seem thick enough that I wouldn't worry about something like cooked potato. Just remember you have to cook firm items first to make them sufficiently soft. Cleaning takes some work just because it is a larger contraption, but would be no different than any other ricer. As a ricer, I am happy with it.

For mashed potatoes, it works well, but it is easier to make them with a good strong wire potato masher. This makes creamy mashed potatoes of more consistent consistency, but depending on the hole size can still have enough chunkier tiny bits so that you know it isn't instant potato flakes.

I always thought of a ricer as a single utility item that was not worthwhile, especially when one can mash a potato in a variety of ways. After trying this ricer, I have learned a thing or two about the quality of potatoes produced by a ricer, and the other uses for one.

First of all, using a ricer to make mashed potatoes creates a superior result. They are lighter, fluffier, and require no added butter, milk or cream. They also are hotter because you don't have to add cold ingredients. I prepared a russet potato by steaming peeled and cubed bits in the microwave with a small amount of water, drained them, and placed the pieces in the ricer and pressed. I might add this is fantastic if you are making only one or two potatoes worth of mash and is a much better option for a single person or couple.

Second, I used the ricer to make egg salad. There are three settings on the ricer that allow you to set the fineness of the result by rotating the dial. For egg salad, you use the biggest holes and it does an excellent job pressing eggs out in such a way as to make lighter, fluffier salad with a more even distribution of pieces. The instructions mention that the second setting is good for draining water off of certain types of greens (like spinach). I haven't tried this yet, but it sounds like a much better way than squeezing it out by hand and I look forward to using it for that purpose in the future.

The thing I didn't expect was that it's actually easier to prepare a lot of things by simply pressing them through the ricer rather than chopping, mashing, or draining them by hand or even with a processor or mixer. The clean up isn't really all that different and it's certainly faster to rice a potato than it is to use a hand mixer to mash one.

I have owned several potato ricers over the years. They are the well known secret to fluffy, lump-free mashed potatoes as well as being useful for a variety of other foods. I had one that was all stainless steel, one that was mostly plastic, big ones, small ones, etc. However, this is the first ricer that I have ever owned with adjustable grates.

I have seen many people over-mash their potatoes with either an electric mixer or with a manual masher. Over-mashing, or even over-stirring them, will cause the potatoes to become too starchy. Ricing them gives you smooth dish that also tastes great.

I have a few minor issues with the finish on this product. There were burnish marks on both the cylinder and the handle but I can overlook those. Also, the rubber part of the grip lifts up and catches on my hand when I grab it. I will probably super-glue it down. Other than that I think that this is a wonderful product and I am happy to own it.

This thing is great. Notch for holding it over a bowl or pot. Narrow chamber that makes the best use of your force. My wife never knew what i ment buy fluffy potatoes until I made them with this thing. The adjustable plates make it very useful. With cheese cloth, you can even make apple juice from fresh apples. It take a little elbow grease to remove the plate the first couple of times, but it gets easier with time. This is probably the best ricer on the market.

This rices potatoes fine, until it breaks. Mine broke after less than ten uses, which was (unfortunately) 6 months after I bought it. The sheet metal that attaches to the black plastic cup bent, and now I can't use it at all. I wasnt squeezing it especially hard at the time - I was attempting to rice a single potato!

I have a photo to show how it broke, but it seems Amazon have disabled the ability to upload images for this product.
