Here's a Good Tip
After dividing your apple, try tying a rubber band around the apple for transport. The slices' proximity to one another will keep the apple from turning brown.
Core and slice apples and pears with ease with the OXO Good Grips Apple Divider. Soft, wide handles take the pressure off your hands, and sharp, stainless steel blades glide easily through fruit and yield perfect slices. The handles are raised to assure ample clearance between your hands and the table. The OXO Good Grips Apple Divider is perfect for pies, cobbler or preparing a simple snack.
One second is all it takes to yield perfectly cut fruit slices with this tool by Oxo. Also a great tool for pears, the apple divider's soft, oversize rubber handles relieve and absorb the pressure from your hands for a nearly effortless cut. Positioned at an angle upward from the blade base, the handles ensure that hands and fingers have ample clearance from tabletops and cutting boards. Stainless steel makes the blades easy to clean and dishwasher-safe.
The Good Grips line features durable, nonslip, flexible handles on every product. Ergonomically designed to fit the palm comfortably and softly, the pressure-absorbing processed rubber handle puts less tension on the hands while still providing an outstanding grip. Made from the same material as dishwasher gaskets, the handles are slip-proof--wet or dry--as well as dishwasher-safe. Good Grips products are moderately priced and have won the Tylenol/Arthritis Foundation Design Award. --Laurie Notaro

Now that the initial bliss of having sharper blades has worn off, I've found a couple of issues with the overall design. First, the position of the handles (and the fact that they are part of the ring of plastic that forms the outer edge of the slicer) causes the center of the slicer to bow upward slightly when pressure is applied. It's hard to get a solid cut through the bottom skin of the apple, because the circular blade around to core tends to lift slightly when the plastic from the handles flexes under pressure. I find that I have to rip the slices free from the core about 80% of the time.
The other issue that I have with the design is that portions of the circular core blade are made up of two overlapping layers of metal (where the points of the triangular out blades meet the core blade). These two layers are not flush and have little gaps that trap small pieces of apple. They're EXTREMELY hard to clean adequately, and I often find little chunks of apple still embedded in these areas even after I've scrubbed it clean. I wouldn't be surprised if these areas also had a tendency to rust over time as a result of this issue, but at the bare minimum, it's a nuisance when it comes to properly cleaning the slicer.
It's an acceptable slicer and I am still using it daily, but I feel like it's just a matter of time before I get frustrated with it and replace it with something better. My more basic, all-metal slicer lasted for years before I decided to replace it with something newer and "better," but I doubt I'll have this one for even a year.
I feel like this is a totally magic product, despite its simplicity. Apparently I've just never used a corer before. But by centering this device on top of an apple and pushing a little weight into it, you can create eight gorgeous equal pieces of apple! YUM.
But in all seriousness... this corer definitely feels sturdy. I always get a little nervous when I push down on the handles but they seem to be able to take the pressure. I took off one star for two primary reasons:
- the cut seems to go about 95% of the way and then you need to work some magic yourself and do the rest by hand
- handwashing can be difficult because the blades are sharp and the little nooks and crannies can be hard to get into
Two things that are worth taking one star off for, but definitely don't make me change my mind about how great this product is. I'm sure if I had kids I'd be able to say something like "this helps me show my daughter that eating fruits and veggies can be fun!" or something... but nope. I'm just a college graduate who can appreciate a good, evenly cut, apple slice.
