OXO is a very expensive brand selling products you can get from a ton of other companies for much cheaper, and I really wish I could slam them for it... but I keep buying more and more OXO products.

The handle is tight to the metal so water can't get into the handle and corrode the metal. That was the main appeal to me, as food and moisture getting caught in crevices of cheaper brands always annoys me, and leads to rusting. I still don't trust using a dishwasher for most of my kitchen gadgets, but I'll throw this thing in the dishwasher and just hang it when it comes out, without fear.

The hang loop is convenient. The grips on the handle allow you to keep control even when mashing large batches or mashing very quickly. The product is a basic, but very well made, masher with exception of the handle, which is "OXO quality." OXO has always emphasized quality materials and good design over easy and cheap manufacturing. That's what makes their products worth the money in my opinion.

Solid potato masher

I bought the Oxo potato masher to replace an older no-name brand. I liked that it had some heft, the masher head is thicker steel than my old masher, and with the thick handle typical of most Oxo products, it's very comfortable for really working those potatoes over well. I find it also works well for sweet potatoes, but not as well for squash, which is very fibrous, and for beans, which need a finer mash. I prefer to mash those with a different style of masher. Yes, I do have several drawers full of utensils.

This masher is the typical length, which works well for up to several pounds of potatoes, in a 10 inch pot. The masher head is narrower than my old masher, but it seems to work just as well. Only time will tell how well the steel and handle hold up.

This masher is perfectly sized. It's not too small and not too large. Small enough that you can use it in a bowl if you want to and large enough that it doesn't take too long to mash potatoes.

The gaps in the stainless steel wire head are narrow. Mashing a few times leaves behind a few chunks if you like. If you don't, further mashing a couple of times gives fairly smooth mashed potatoes. I also use it for mashing avocados for a chunky guacamole.

The construction is sturdy and the handle has good grip. Just that the handle, as described by the manufacturer, is soft and it gets scratched easily. Even fingernails leave behind marks on the rubber. In the long run, the handle will reveal the masher's age.

I bought it a year ago and I’m very happy with my purchase. It’s one of those kitchen utensils you know you’ll use often and have forever. The masher is very sturdy and well made. It makes great mashed potatoes, cauliflower mash, and my favorite, guacamole. I like my guacamole part smooth and part chunky. Add a bit of cumin, fresh cilantro, diced red or Maui Onion, fresh garlic, fresh lime juice, chopped jalapeño, and a pinch of Celtic Salt(or organic white soy miso).

BTW, if you’re on the path of going salt-free, Dr. Greger suggests using a bit of organic white soy miso. I add it to many sweet or savory dishes. For more information as to why it’s the healthiest salt option, check out Greger’s video shorts on all things nutrition at nutritionfacts.org.

This is one amazing tool. The genius of the thing is it not only mashes potatoes, but it also mashes other things like carrots, squash, beets, and a lot of other things. This tool replaces a multitude of single use tools like carrot mashers. No other country could invent a product that is so beneficial to mankind, making the world a better place. This magnificent piece of engineering was later found to be predicted in Einstein's explanation of the curvature of time and space. The simplicity of the thing is simply amazing yet complex at the same time. Be sure to read, understand and follow all the instructions that come with this tool. Don't be fooled into thinking it is benign. I badly mashed my hand.
I gave this four stars because it's instructions do not explicitly state to cook the vegetables prior to mashing. That's how I mashed my hand.
Makes a good birthday present for your wife. Also, a good Bingo prize. Take my word on this.

Handle broke, but company replaced under warranty

UPDATE: I emailed OXO about the problem and they apologized and promptly sent me a replacement under warranty. Changing my rating from 2 starts to 4 stars due to the excellent customer service.

The handle came apart in less than 3 years of light use. The rubber part slid off of the plastic part (yes, it's plastic in the handle, not metal). Looks like it was held in place only by some glue. Engineers could have easily made the bond permanent either with stronger adhesive/epoxy or a different physical design.

It's kind of hard to get too excited about a potato masher, but I'm really happy with this one. The one I had before I ordered this one was about 25+ years old. It always worked well on potatoes but recently I started using it to mash up cooked ground beef as well. Sometimes if you walk away from the stove when you're cooking ground beef it cooks into big clumps. The masher worked really well to mash it into nice small pieces. I used to use a spoon but it takes forever. Unfortunately the masher I had, only had a single wire going into the handle. Eventually the mash and twist action I was using twisted the wire in the handle itself and it fell out. This one has two tines going into a very sturdy handle. It seems very well made and should hold up well to the mash and twist.

I’ll Never Need Another

I bought this to replace a plastic masher that I’d had and always hated. The grate in that masher had holes that were impossible to clean and the handle was very short. This masher by OXO is amazing. The handle is the perfect length for a good grip and leverage. The metal grate is a squiggle so it does a great job mashing but it also super easy to rinse and wipe clean. It doesn’t look like it would be super study but it is very well made and I don’t think I’ll ever need to buy another masher...unless I want 2 of these!
