I thought I was purchasing a book about the Supreme Court during the Obama era. However, it turns out I bought a book which was a PR piece for Obama and the progressive left members of the Supreme Court. For example, whereas Scalia and Thomas get passing, neutral references, Ginsburg gets pages about her tough life and how she's come through it all as the Best Justice Ever. And the statements about Obama are so fawning that at first I thought it was irony. It wasn't until I was halfway through the book that I realized the author was serious. If you're already a liberal and want to feel good about the left influence on the Supreme Court, and that Obama is the Best President Ever, read this book. However, if you want a neutral perspective on the relationship between the Supreme Court and the President, don't read this book.

I would not have purchased this book if it were not required for a class. How incredibly boring!

Toobin's liberal bias is pervasive throughout this book, so much so that it damages his credibility. Consider the title of one chapter, "The Unrequited Bipartisanship of Barack Obama". If he can't at least admit that Obama is just as partisan, if not more so, than any other politician in Washington, then it makes me question what else is inaccurate in the book. To illustrate Toobin's liberal bias, I noted the adjectives he used to describe the justices and others throughout the book. You'll see that they are gushingly positive towards liberals and scathingly negative towards conservatives.

Alito: phlegmatic, bloodless, clunky, miserable, vulgar, incisive
Scalia: hysterical, belligerent, apoplectic, splenetic, partisan, raucous, right-wing crank.
Kennedy: imperious
Sotomayor: altruistic, decisive, unequivocal, impeccably qualified, wise
Kagan: poised, self-confident
Ginsburg: powerful, thorough
Republicans: hostile
Bush: Texas swagger produced the Iraq war

Toobin makes no effort to conceal his bitterness over the Citizens United and Ledbetter cases and is staunchly anti-gun, pro-abortion and anti-originalist. He says that conservatives are dismissive of women's autonomy.

In summary, his views and opinions obscure what would have otherwise been useful and interesting information. Its just really hard to see through the bias to get to it.

For this book to have a 4+ star rating tells me one thing; all those rating it 4+ stars are confirmed liberals who drank the Obama "hope and change" cool-aid. First the book's title bears no relationship to its content. The writing just wanders around, selectively praising liberals and Democrats while demonizing conservatives and Republicans. It is not in any way a scholarly work. I read "The Nine" and liked it and thought Toobin a better than average writer. He should have stopped there, because his credibility with me is now zero. He is an unabashed liberal with an agenda and none of it is fair minded journalism.

Largely written elsewhere, feels plagiarized. Bias is clear. Overall, intellectually dishonest.

This book is ridiculous, but thats to be expected from professional NSA apologist Toobin. I bought this before his utterly shameful punditry concerning the NSA, but I will never send another dime his way. Boycotting him and other similar collaborators is the only way to hit them where it hurts. Also, next time I see him on any cable news program, I will not only change the channel, but I will block the channel on my television.

A disappointing work. Superficially deals with serious issues which makes it difficult for the author to conceal his liberal bias. You may need to burn this book to stay warm next winter if Obama is reelected.

Like so many other authors with a political agenda, Toobin can't help but insert his own leanings into his analysis of the Supreme Court and Obama. Toobin is clearly a bright guy and a good lawyer, but he now lives in a PC bubble that colors everything that he says and does.

I see Toobin regularly on CNN, always paired with a black, a woman, or both. He is unfailingly courteous to these people, even though it is clear to us - and to him - that he is way more qualified to speak on the subject at hand. I can imagine that every planning meeting at CNN involved what women, blacks, gays, etc. think about the story to be covered, and Toobin must smile and nod. So when he sits down to write a book about such divisive figures, he feels the overwhelming urge to tow the PC line.

So we see here that Obama is VERY smart and good, Roberts a little less of both. Justice Ginsburg is The Feminist; Sotomayer, The Hispanic; Kagan, The Homosexual former classmate. Little is said about the conservative Justices despite the fact that ALL of them contributed much more to the Court. It is how they book guests on CNN, and clearly Toobin has CNN on the brain. Like any episode of Piers Morgan, not very eventful but not very offending.

ADDENDUM: In this book, Toobin sees fit to revisit the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings of 1991 and to assert that he believes Anita Hill that Thomas acted inappropriately. But it turns out that Toobin himself has acted much more inappropriately than Thomas or even Bill Clinton: Toobin had an affair while married with children, and impregnated his paramour. Bu some arrangement, Toobin and wife remain together; nothing is said about whether he supports his love-child. People who live in glass houses...
