About the Author
Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, M.D., an internationally renowned researcher, author and advocate of the natural healing power of water, was born in Iran in 1931. He attended Fettes College in Scotland and was a graduate of St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School of London University, where he studied under Sir Alexander Fleming, who shared the Nobel Prize for the discovery of penicillin. Dr. Batmanghelidj practiced medicine in the United Kingdom before returning to Iran where he played a key role in the development of hospitals and medical centers. He also helped establish sport projects for youth in Iran, including The Ice Palace in Tehran, the first ice skating and sports complex in the Middle East. When the Iranian Revolution broke out in 1979, Dr. Batmanghelidj was placed in the infamous Evin Prison as a political prisoner for two years and seven months. It was there he discovered the healing powers of water. One night, Dr. B. had to treat a fellow prisoner with crippling peptic ulcer pain. With no medications at his disposal, Dr. B. gave him two glasses of water. Within eight minutes, his pain disappeared. He was instructed to drink two glasses of water every three hours and became absolutely pain free for his four remaining months in the prison. Dr. B. successfully treated 3,000 fellow prisoners suffering from stress-induced peptic ulcer disease with water alone. While in prison he conducted extensive research into the medicinal effects of water in preventing and relieving many painful degenerative diseases. Evin proved an ideal “stress laboratory,” and despite his being offered an earlier release, Dr. B. chose to stay an extra four months in prison to complete his research into the relationship of dehydration and bleeding peptic ulcer disease. The report of his findings was published as the editorial of the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology in June 1983. The New York Times Science Watch reported this discovery on June 21, 1983. On his release from prison in 1982, Dr. Batmanghelidj escaped from Iran and came to America. At the Foundation for the Simple in Medicine he began to research the effect of chronic unintentional dehydration on the human body. His findings were published in the Foundation’s “Journal of Science in Medicine Simplified” in 1991 and 1992. They can be read on the web site www.watercure.com. Dr. F. Batmaghelidj wrote his first self-help book “Your Body’s Many Cries for Water” in 1992, in which he stated that a dry mouth is not a reliable indicator of dehydration. The body signals its water shortage by producing pain. Dehydration actually produces pain and many degenerative diseases, including asthma, arthritis, hypertension, angina, adult-onset diabetes, lupus and multiple sclerosis. Dr. B’s message to the world is, “You are not sick, you are thirsty. Don’t treat thirst with medication.” Dr. F. Batmanghelidj devoted the last 20 years of his life promoting public awareness of the healing powers of water. He appeared on hundreds of radio and television programs and lectured around the world. He has left a body of valuable works of six books and more than a dozen educational audio and video seminars. His work has created an international community that has embraced the natural healing of the water cure. His ground-breaking book “Your Body’s Many Cries for Water” has been translated into 15 languages and continues to inspire readers all over the world. Dr. F. Batmanghelidj died of complications from pneumonia on November 15, 2004, in Virginia, U.S.A. He was 73.

I have read this book and other Dr. Batmanghelidj books and started the water cure for diseases. I find it tragic that many Americans do not like the taste of pure water and will reach for a manufactured beverage instead of water. Please read this book to find out the many ways that dehydration affects the body. We are instructed to drink half your body wait in ounces of water with the addition of a small amount of pure sea salt (not table salt) to restore hydration and critical minerals to our body.
Dr. Batmanghelidj also advocates walking as the best form of whole body exercise for all ages. The Chinese advocate exercises, such as t'ai chi and chi gong, that emphasis whole body exercise to keep the body supple,
Simple solutions like movement and proper hydration yield very powerful results. I now sleep better, have lost weight, no longer have swollen ankles and fingers and have a positive outlook on life.
I have witnessed first hand, the miracle of a life returning as a patient was given saline (salty water). While working as an R.N. in an Emergancy Department, I watched a patients monitor signaled a life threatening drop in his blood pressure. The doctor was yelling at me to get a huge bore cannula into the vein, and get that saline in, as fast as possible. It was a rush with time, but as the saline surged into the patients veins, his blood pressure rose to normal. Have you ever watched a long distant race on the T.V. only to see the runner collapse and die as a result of heat stroke... Their body fluids have dropped below normal, and the simple fact is, they were dehydrated!
This book, by a medical doctor explains the scientific process of how our body needs water.. and why?
Before I had heard or read anything about this blessed person, I had begun drinking more water, from personal experience with spinal disc problems, realizing that a type of chronic, mild dehydration seemed to aggravate that condition, and retaining enough water kept it at bay.
After reading this book, "Obesity, Cancer, & Depression: Their Common Cause & Natural Cure," I comprehended more of the reasons and physiological facts (which are presented in easily comprehensible terms) for what I had already instinctively accepted on my own.
Also, from this book, I learned why salt is so vital a companion with water, and how natural sea salt, from which the accompanying minerals have not been removed, is vitally different from table salt. I learned more clearly how to successfully manage my daily routines of sea salt and water.
I have always loved salt and used it liberally, never having bought the "program" against it, and I've always craved natural, salt-cured ham and bacon (which is hard to find in these days of insane conflicts on what's actually healthy; I hope to write more on that later, in a blog entry on my Amazon-Connect Author Profile Page). I'm very thankful to this book, though, that I now understand what table salt has been lacking (which it had in its natural beginnings, but purveyors had removed).
I've reviewed several sea salt offerings on Amazon, and am still happily using those I purchased from Pacific Resources Organic Sea Salt, Coarse Ground, 2.2-Pound Bag (Pack of 4) and Coarse Granulated Original Himalayan Crystal Sea Salt, though I still recommend all the salts I reviewed. The mineral content in some are different, depending on where they are collected. I liked the fact that magnesium is in the Pacific Resources salt, because that is one of the minerals I have been deficient in, causing horrible cramping attacks which are immediately relieved by that sea salt, as my review explained. If not for Dr. Batman, however, I would not have learned the vital differences among types of salts (which I began studying on Amazon's buying pages, after I had read this book).
There's a lot more valuable information in this book than what I've mentioned here. This book should be a health resource on every "coffee table"... (Oops! Sorry! Couldn't help that caffeine humor slip. Read the book to see the inside joke.)
I would recommend any and all of Dr. Batmanghelidj's offerings on the Water Cure. I chose this one to begin with because, from what I could tell from my research, it was the most recent he had published, actually fairly close to his death. What it explains most clearly is how most diseases have been identified with separate, ugly medical terms; yet all of them (including aging) appear to relate directly to a single cause. Chronic, low-grade dehydration.
I'm deeply thankful that this man was able to impart his considerable knowledge and wisdom prior to his returning to his place in heaven, which he has earned many times over.
We weren't born to live forever. At least not yet in this time and space incarnation. But while I'm here, I would like to be as pain free and productive as possible. Dr. Batmanghelidj's collected knowledge has greatly assisted me on both those fronts.
Due to the work he has left with us, I'm sure this man is in a state of ultimate peace.
With undying respect (and humor slipping freely, as I believe this man's spirit would appreciate),
