Pro-tip: To dedicate one of your unused line keys to speed dial your Google Voice voicemail, enter your device's basic configuration from your OBiTalk dashboard and under "Configure and Label Your Line Keys", set the desired line key to "Speed Dial" "Auto", give it a name like "Voicemail", and set the extension to "sp1(12225551234)". Replace the number in parens with your 1-prefixed Google Voice number, and replace sp1 with sp2 through sp6 if your Google Voice is configured on a secondary Service Provider slot (see attached image). Select "Save". Your phone should quick reboot and your Google Voicemail is now only one button press away.
Pros:
- Works with Google Voice. Place domestic calls in the US for free. Free three-way calling. Free voicemail. Keyword: free.
- One touch call forwarding. Leaving the office and rather take calls on your mobile? Tap one button and be on your way.
- Excellent echo cancellation on speakerphone. Multiple people have claimed they did not realize they were on speaker.
- Good overall call quality.
- Feels like a quality product.
Nits:
- Handset will not balance between ear and shoulder. Forget it. Use speakerphone instead.
- Softkeys do not press down evenly (rock to one side or another) and have too much resistance; easy to accidentally dial a digit twice. If you often place calls requiring key entry (conference and automated lines), this is probably a con. Would prefer plastic keys with better pressure feedback.
- Set up is somewhat technical.
Cons:
- Configuration can be done in three places, the OBiTalk website, local IP access to the phone itself, and on the phone. The former overrides the latter two. I ended up with most config via OBiTalk and some minor tweaks locally, where OBiTalk config didn't work for me. Would be nice if these services would at least fully sync settings bi-directionally.

I purchased the phone specifically to use it with Google Voice. But initial setup was hampered by the fact it has to first talk to Obihai's infrastructure where apparently the DNS server used matters. Initially my DHCP server provided one of Google's servers (e.g. 8.8.8.8), but the phone simply refused to talk. Obihai's web site suggested a different DNS server (e.g. 4.2.2.2) which in fact works. I still need to figure out who owns that server. It worries me.
After the phone is able to talk to Obihai and shows up on their web portal, out of the box it failed setup with Google attempting to talk to an IP address where there is nothing home at that address. Taking a firmware update fixed this problem and the phone was up and running with Google Voice.
At this point I attempted to get a BlueTooth headset to work with the phone. No luck. Tried a Bose and a few other headsets where the headsets pair and when the phone is off hook you can hear a background hiss. But there is no in call audio in the headset. This problem is well documented on Obihai's own forum and apparently has been well know for many months caused by firmware pushed out by the manufacture. In the forum the users have settled on downgrading the firmware to an older version where BlueTooth works. I can attest that downgrading the firmware enabled my headsets to work with the phone. It is not clear what one is giving up by using the older firmware.
The phone also provides a means to connect to traditional analog telephone headsets from Poly and others. Think something used in a call center. Additionally a 3.5 mm jack is provided, but when I tested this interface background noise from the phone was very annoying. In short electronic noise from the phone's processing is coupled into the 3.5mm's jack audio to the point that it would be hard to deal with day in day out. Thus the 3.5mm jack is largely worthless. Finally the phone in theory supports a USB based headset but I haven't tested this feature...yet.
I contacted Polycom about the BlueTooth problem. Their response from an international response center was to use their analog enterprise headsets, either with a wire tether or wireless (not BlueTooth). Said another way they did not address the question of BlueTooth not working, telling me to buy one of their non-BlueTooth headsets. Perhaps with the acquisition of Obihai by Polycom, there was a corporate decision to force users to use the RJ9 jack for headset in the hopes of selling Polycom headsets.
With respect to audio quality in a call with a BlueTooth headset, the experience is somewhat lacking. Even sitting feet from the phone you can hear packet loss over the BlueTooth link where the audio is best defined as thin, much unlike using a BlueTooth headset with cellphones such as from Samsung or Apple. In fact on the Obihai web site one user commented that the best wireless experience is in fact a wireless non-BlueTooth headset interfaced via the RJ9 jack. Point in fact by the time you buy such a wireless headset and two (yes 2) adapter cables, the headset cost is likely to exceed the purchase price of the phone. Though this is mostly no different than what would happen for a traditional non-Bluetooth phone...
Clearly one of the decision criteria for purchasing the Obihai 1062 phone was the ability to use a BlueTooth headset with the phone. Without the firmware downgrade, I would be forced to spend what would amount to half or more the price of the phone to purchase a RJ9 based wired headset. in fact if this was the case the likelihood is I would return the phone for a refund. But with the firmware downgrade I have a path forward, but I remain worried that the firmware downgrade path will backfire in the short term because something else will change forcing the use of later non-BlueTooth functioning firmware.
I received a response from Poly (owner of the OBIHAI product range) that BlueTooth is no longer supported on the 1062 phone. They referred me to their range of non-BlueTooth headsets.
