A proper detective novel grips you from the opening, drags you through the mud and rain-slick streets and makes you want to scream "Who did it? Which of these bastards did it?! What happened to that guy???!!!"
The Obituarist does all that and more. A brilliant piece in voice, structure, wit and mystery, every chapter ends with a punch in the gut moment - literally, in one case. The lead character isn't a detective - he's the titular obituarist, a specialist in cleaning up the online detritus left behind when someone dies - but he has an office in Port Virtue, a scummy little town full of low-lifes; he lives an isolated, hand-to-mouth existence, has a client who walks in the door and turns his life upside down, and a dodgy relationship with the fuzz. He also has a unique voice, an irreverence, worldview and sense of humour that belongs very much in the 21st century, even as he flawlessly evokes a genre with roots eighty years old.
That's another thing about The Obituarist: this book isn't just a gripping detective story, defining a new sub-genre I have coined "Facebook Noir". No: it's also really funny. The situations are serious, but the prose and our protagonist are both whip-smart and funny as hell.
This is different in tone and structure from O'Duffy's other work, like the brilliant
Hotel Flamingo
, but his voice still shines through and leaves you both satisfied and wanting more. I hope he returns to Port Virtue for another dose, 'cos I'm hooked and I'm gonna need another fix.

A clever twist on the hard-boiled detective genre, updated for the modern world. At times O'Duffy's tongue is firmly lodged in his cheek, poking fun at the very tropes he exploits. His invention of a new niche occupation - social media undertaker - is all too plausible, given our obsession with image and reputation. He may well have created a whole new job category.
This is a fun, fast read, and the main character, Kendall, could be revisited in further stories. At least, this reviewer hopes so.

"The Obituatist" is a tight little story that runs along like a freight train, delivering wisecracks and shocks with equal aplomb - and deadly accuracy in both cases. O'Duffy writes a convincingly grungy story of what lies behind all those Facebooks and Tumblrs, without losing the reader in jargon or geek in-jokes. If you're looking for a blend of Chandleresque noir with an up-to-the-minute feel for today's world of social media, this is the story you've been waiting for.
Personally, I can't wait to return to Port Virtue, and maybe even learn more about the story of Kendall the Obitaurist.

I expected a lot from this book, but not humour. And certainly not pathos and humanity. I laughed aloud several times as the reluctant hero is punched, shot at, pursued, attacked, chased and inveigled in a mere 100 pages. This detective novel (a pastiche on Chandler) is faster than a locomotive and surprises by having more heart than you expect it too. What I enjoyed most about it, though, is the way even the criminals are flawed human beings, trying to get ahead in a tough world. Mr O'Duffy sequel please. I loved Kendall and I loved Port Virtue.

I really like this take on modern noir. The main character is both what you expect and surprising. I recommend for any mystery fan, especially those who like modern takes on the mystery/detective genre.

Good job, Mr. O'Duffy, it was a fast paced mystery, with suspense woven between the lines. I enjoyed
it a lot. and have recommended to my friends. Anxious now for a sequel.

A twist on modern noir, blending classic elements of nasty people being generally unpleasant to each other with the modern realities of the digital footprint and online messing around that we all will inevitably leave behind. Easy to read, chapters are a good length, the pace keeps going - a most excellent toilet book, one that requires you to make sure that you come back soon for fear of forgetting a detail that turns out to be crucial to the plot.

This is a really enjoyable read.
The language suits the theme of online grave robbing (identity theft and post mortem social media)and using a hardboiled style the author manages to tantalisingly skim the surface of the world he has created. I can't wait for the follow up.

A Chandleresque protagonist with a modern. Clips along, without pausing for breath, zero fat here. I highly recommend this tale.
