Leonard Peikoff presents a comprehensive overview of the philosophy of Objectivism. He systematically covers all the branches of philosophy, from metaphysics through esthetics, rationally validating his foundations and successively building point by point. Rand's many revolutionary concepts, from the primacy of existence to psycho-epistemology to concept formation to the importance of context and hierarchy, are covered in detail and clearly explained. The base of metaphysics and epistemology leads inexorably to her ethics and politics.
This book should be read by anyone interested in philosophy (which is hopefully a wide as audience as possible). Even for those who don't agree with her, this book will present her actual ideas, which is very rare when her name is brought up in discussions. Read it for yourself and make your own conclusions about her ideas and where she may have erred.
For those familiar with her ideas, this book will reaffirm the importance of ideas in life and will display her truly unique intellect.
It is simply impossible to come away from this book without having learned anything. It is written as a philosophical treatise, but is very readable and thought provoking. Leonard Peikoff is Ayn Rand's chosen heir and the most qualified person and he undoubtedly lived up to his reputation.

Review
“A revelation...Peikoff is an extraordinary communicator...He brings the most difficult intellectual ideas within the grasp of the general reader.”—Detroit Free Press
Praise for Leonard Peikoff
“Offers a truly revolutionary idea…The book is clear, tight, disciplined, beautifully structured, and brilliantly reasoned. Its style is clear and hard as crystal—and as sparkling… As to my personal reaction, I can express it best by paraphrasing a line from Atlas Shrugged: ‘It’s so wonderful to see a great, new, crucial achievement which is not mine!’”—Ayn Rand
“Extraordinarily perceptive…frightening insights…Everyone concerned with the collectivist trend in today’s world should read this book.”—Alan Greenspan
“A fascinating weave of German history, philosophic determinism, and Objectivist polemic.”—Chicago Tribune

A real disappointment. I was looking forward to reading this oft-recommended, definitive propounding of Ayn Rand's grand philosophy, Objectivism. What I found was a narrowly focused polemic untethered to modern science. Rand can be forgiven for knowing so little of Evolution, cognition, and even basic biology, but then she claims too much as her purview; making strange claims about human nature; creating and then dismissing the weakest of straw men arguments, and all with unearned confidence. Rarely have I read someone less capable of explaining how things actually work while trying to tell us all how to live, or rather, rarely have I read someone doing so who wasn't claiming to be, or speak for, god. Another failure of the market, the perceived value of the good dropping the moment it was more accurately understood, but only after the sale.

It is a carefully and clearly written treatise on the most important treatment of Philosophy. I have always thought, seeing how succesful Mankind is in the growth of the so called exact sciences, as opposed to the catastrophe we have in Ethics and Politics, that these two extremely important subjects should be given to the engineers and scientists responsible for landing Man on the Moon, for their study and development. That is exactly what Ayn Rand has given us. For the first time Philosophy is an exact science. It is simply a Science, if science is knowlege, pure and unadulterated. Thus, Objectivism is all you need if you want consistent and true answers to the basic questions we all have in Ethics and Politics. We can dispense with all the nonsense we were taught. Kant et al can and should be put to rest. They are a ripe subject for Archeologists

This is the finest explication of Ayn Rand's philosophy ever written. Not only is this a "must read," but also a "must own," for any student of Objectivism." It is an authoritative explanation that Leonard Peikoff, Ayn Rand's designated intellectual heir has written of her philosophy of Objectivism.

The best, most easily assimilated work on Rand's brilliant philosophy. Second would probably be the collection of Branden's early lecture course.

Any Rand is the best influential thinker since Aristotle!
This book is not written by her but provides a good summary of her philosophy/ideas and is a great introduction to Objectivism. I recommend reading this book AFTER reading Atlas Shrugged and then at least least one of her non-fiction works (Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal, Virtue of Selfishness, For the New Intellectual). Otherwise, some of the concepts discussed in this book will seem confusing.

Having read some philosophical treatises, I was prepared to have to wrestle with this one.
Not the case.
The explanations are very accessible and Peikoff makes a good case for Objectivism. If you're curious about Ayn Rand, but don't want to take the time to read her books, this is a very nice intro/summary.

A very good exposition of Rand's position. Actually makes all previous philosophy "obsolete", (as if Bertrand Russell didn't already do that). A neglected but vitally important book, for those who believe in Reason and Freedom, and who have hope for the future of mankind. If you love Reason and logical argument, you'll love this book.

Man this guy is good to read on the page. He is a teacher. This is an important distinction to offer. To me Ayn Rand works as more of a statement broadcaster and staunch intellectual fighter and I find her own presentation of her ideas quite opaque even as they are deliciously crystal clear linguistically. Her vision was so much a part of her own knowledge and all her conclusions and statements emerged from so well ordered a bedrock of context in her mind that whilst her offerings may be very intriguing, I have never found much of it conclusive at first reading. Hence the need for a teacher, which is a skill and ability in it's own right. Leonard Peikoff looks after people like me by exploring and unveiling very clearly this vast bedrock of context with elegant accessibility and an exciting rate of progress through the pages. Also to his credit as a teacher, his presentation is laid out into very manageable and aesthetically well presented chapters subheadings and digestible paragraphs so reflecting on the path of your progress is much easier than when mining through the solid, black, densely packed, tiny font of the usual paperback publications of Rand's work. Another advantage of this book is that whatever striking character Dr Peikoff's speaking voice contains - audible in any online video or recording - is here not so much of a charming distraction. Same applies to Ms Rand. I have encountered senior Objectivists whose voices are relatively unnoticeable by virtue of their 'normality' (for want of a better word) and so can vouch for the fact that apparently to be a leading Objectivist it is not essential you have a strikingly characteristic voice like Ayn Rand or Leonard Peikoff!! Luckily in this book only the well printed words and then the light of these ideas hits your senses and mind which makes for much easier processing. And this is not a comment presented here for laughs. I find most rejection of Ayn Rands ideas are in their roots a rejection of her as a certain kind of person. Rejection of: her "obnoxious style", her thick accent, her readiness to lay out a provocative position with provocative wording etc . . . all making it very much easier for the average passing layman to get away with escaping a vast philosophy with a few convenient 'she's simply all for an awful dog eat dog kill yr enemy cruel world' 'she's clearly just a product of her Russian background' 'Her politics is economically antiquated' ...etc ALL of which are W I L D L Y inaccurate, almost the complete reverse in each instance of what is true, and betray a thorough ignorance or at best misunderstanding of the Objectivist philosophy. This book is the best publication i think there is for capturing effectively and elucidating brightly the highly worthwhile ridiculously interesting and potentially extremely valuable ideas of Ayn Rand to anyone willing to open the first page. Thumbs up, and I hope this helps

Philosophy: a guide to living a good life.

This is one of my favourite books and I’m only halfway through. The section on virtues is where I’m up too and it’s full of wisdom that makes sense. It’s like a light bulb moment. The productivity virtue and the explanation got me thinking about so many unhappy people.
Her philosophy is right, you can’t be happy if you are not productive and doing the best you can for your level of ability.
I can’t wait to finish reading it and will reread it again within a few months. There’s too many gems I’ve probably missed on the 1st reading.

I bought this as an auido book because I was doing a lot of commuting and did not really have the opportunity to read the written form of the work. The narrative style is clear and concise and the quality is excellent. Even though it is many many hours long it never seeemed boring or repetitive. I cannot commend the work highly enough.
