About the Author

Cat Waters is the pen name for New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Tara Sue Me. Tara wrote her first novel at the age of twelve. It would be twenty years before she picked up her pen to write the second. After completing several clean romances, she decided to try her hand at something spicier and started The Submissive. What began as a writing exercise quickly took on a life of its own and The Dominant and The Training soon followed. An avid reader of all types of fiction, she soon discovered she enjoyed writing a variety as well. Tara lives in the Southeastern United States with her husband, two children, two dogs, and a cat.

Boy, this book will be hard to review without spoiling anything.

At the age of 16, Athena found herself abandoned and completely alone when her father left her to fend for herself after her mother's death. With nothing but a few hundred dollars in der pockets, she left for Las Vegas in the hopes of becoming a show girl, but ended up in the hands of charming mogul Mike Randolph instead. It didn't take her long to realize that Mike wasn't her savior, but her biggest nightmare.
Now, almost ten years later, Athena is a prostitute and still under tight control of Mike and his second in command, Harris. She's given up on her dream of freedom a long time ago, but is reminded of the life she could have lead when one day she quite literally stumbles into her childhood friend, Isaiah. Now a pastor, kind-hearted and pure, he represents everything she wants yet can't have.
But when Athena finally decides it's time she stand up for herself, all hell breaks loose.
This is the painful story of a woman who made one bad choice in her life she can't seem to live down, but isn't quite willing to give up fighting yet. Will she get the chance to escape her fate? Or will she die trying?

This is a gritty, romantic suspense thriller, full of secrets, deceptions and surprise twists. We never know who to trust, who will betray us (yes, us!) next, and who is our real enemy out there.
I really enjoyed this book, though 'enjoy' may be the wrong word. I was engrossed and hardly able to put it down. With only 172 pages, it was a quick read, but I'm impressed by how much content the author was able to squeeze in such a short novel without overwhelming me with information.

I had two issues with this book, though:
One, I didn't like the flashbacks.

I have read Tara's Submissive Series and I love it but I knew this book would be completely different and it was. I also read the short story, Altered Allies written under Cat Waters and thought it was an awesome short. Cat Waters really is like reading a whole new author. Anyway....lets get to the review.

Athena grew up in a small town but at the age of 16 she ended up in Las Vegas alone. It's been ten years and it hasn't been easy but she is a survivor. She has been working as a prostitute for a very powerful man and he owns her. She was lost when she came to Sin City and he was older and polished, he vowed to help her but it was a trap. He turned her into one of his whores, as he likes to call her. He makes every decision in her life, down to what color is best suited for her. She hates it and wants out but how? She has tried and failed more than once but someone from her past has come into her present...

Isaiah was the last person Athena thought she would run into in Vegas. She hasn't seen him since she was a young teenager and he was even her first kiss. She didn't want to mix her present with her past but he was here and she didn't trust many people because of her job but Isaiah is now a pastor and old friend. He wants to help protect her but can he really be trusted? She really wants to believe in him.

Athena doesn't know what's next but she wants out of this world she has been stuck in for the past ten years but who can she trust? There is Isaiah the pastor, Harris the hitchman to her pimp and her best friend, Vicki.

This story is full of twists and turns. The characters were pretty awesome. Athena is strong, fun and loves reading. The men all have different personalities but I have my favorite.

Yes it's fast-paced and tension filled, dark as in obliterating. The set up draws you in. Heck, it's a stranglehold of a start. Athena is in the worst situation having sold her soul to the devil and his minion aka Mike and Harris, et al. But, honestly I just couldn't connect with Isaiah. A dull bulb and unfortunately I just couldn't connect. Grr. But aside from my not appreciating him Obscured, it's a story worth exploring and plenty have enjoyed. Each reader comes to the table with different expectations and perceptions. Give it a go and write your own review.

This book was a delicious mindbender. Wow. I thought I knew what was up but at times it was clear the reader doesn't have a clue. This book is fast paced with twists and turns that aren't seen immediately. One of the characters endeared himself to me and I could tell something was different about him. I wanted him to be who Athena wanted in her life. I didn't want the story to end but when it did... Wowza! I'm curious to know if there will be another book to come.

I highly recommend this book. While things aren't all they appear, it is also a book about hope. Be sure to add this to your TBR list!

Tara Sure Me switches things up a bit with her latest offering, Obscured, and writes this book as Cat Waters.

This storyline may be a little departure for fans who are used to Tara Sue Me’s Submissive series, however, Obscured still has the flair that we’ve come to know.

A short read at under 200 pages, Obscured, definitely keeps your attention. It dims some of the lights that constantly surrounds Las Vegas; we enter the world of sex trafficking.
