It's a quick read (just under an hour - including re-reading a couple chapters), and while the ideas Gentile offers take time to implement (and I WILL be implementing them), I can't say I really liked this book. It was just okay for me because many of her sub-topics could stand to have a bit more detail. I'm a business coach and strategist myself, and had to re-read a couple of chapters in the book before I realized that the paragraphs that followed the chart were actually explaining the side header of the chart (the top header was explained in Chapter 3). Reading, in my opinion, should not require me to be so intuitive. An extra sentence or two would have made it easier for the reader to figure it out.
If you're someone unfamiliar with Tara's concepts, a few more specific examples would have been helpful. It felt as if the author was talking too much in generalities and principles, rather than showing case studies or how-to specifics that make it easy for a reader to implement what she's talking about. That said, her concepts are useful and valid - if you are okay with her somewhat intuitive writing style. It feels as if it's been written for people who are already familiar with the author's work (and I am, sort of).
The observation engine chart in Chapter 6 is a well-laid out and thoughtful plan for maximizing your social media channels. It's general enough for people to apply to any social platform, and specific enough that you can figure out how to apply it in a way that works for you and your business. The Perspective Map is also a simple, elegant solution to help you filter those conversations so you can apply your findings with the Observation Engine.
I wanted to recommend this book to some of my own clients, but the foggy way it reads means I'm more apt to give clients a reader's digest version or direct them to Tara's blog instead of recommending the book. Depending on how well you know Tara's work, it can be a little hard to follow.
For those interested in this book it's a nugget-filled, but surprisingly short, read on how to create ideas that provide your users with real value.
Tara talks about all of the parts of the Observation Engine, how to properly observe on social media, and how to craft content around a potential idea.
Definitely worth the price, and time, investment.
The Observation Engine helped me glean a deeper level of understanding my clients. The Observation Engine helped me glean a deeper level of understanding my clients. I realized that my relevant conversations aren't those of my direct clients and that I need to get an ear on what my client's clients are saying. That's not at all what I expected and makes perfect sense.
It gave me a deep dive into all of the subtle ways to capture customer's needs and desires; in a way that was easy and authentic.
