While I admire Mika for writing this book and being honest about her own food challenges,I feel that it is too superficial. Her answers to the problem of obesity are too simplistic and too oriented to the world of upper class New York city. As a family doctor in rural North Carolina, it is a far more pervasive problem among the poorer sector of the population. They don't have the option of a personal trainer to work with them,or easy availability of healthy foods.

Ms. Brzesinski's book starts out by saying that she realizes that many people will not be able to takeseriously weight and food struggles from a "thin, fit, sucessful" person. She should've stopped there. I couldn't buy in to her poor me self-serving writing. Leave the sharing of stories to your supposed "co-author" (who never got a mention on the by-line, by the way). I found Diane's chapters way more inspirational and compelling. Mika spent her time telling stories that basically reflected: this horrible eating episode happened and he saw it, didn't you, didn't you? And he saw it too! Right? Right?? And boo-hoo I had to run the equivalent of a marathon to work it off. If you were never fat, you don't get the experience - PERIOD!!

This book is a resounding cheer for all things Mika. Sadly, while glorifying herself, she disparages those not in the Brzezinski image. Criticizing and reprimanding people who already know they may have a problem does not help anyone. It does, however, embellish Mika's already stunning view of herself.

I like Mika Brzezinski, the co-anchor on Morning Joe at MSNBC. I watch MJ most mornings. I do confess, though, that was worried I wouldn't like the book she has been promoting all year on the show. Almost daily, she admonishes the pundits and the audience about eating junk food. She scolds Joe Scarborough for his naughty eating habits.

"I'm writing a book about this," she keeps saying. And now that book is out.

Sure enough, the tone of her book is the same tone she takes on the show: "I know so much more about this than any of you, because I wrote a book about it."

I find that sad, but not as sad as most of the book's recommendations.

Mika knows so much about what's good for us because she has done her research.

Except she hasn't done good research.

She has consulted with "experts" on dieting including the editor of Cosmopolitan magazine about what's contributing to America's obesity epidemic. She also offers insights from Governor Chris Christie who has just announced that he has had weight loss surgery. Certainly Christie is an expert on what it's like to be fat, but not an expert on how to lose weight. Brzezinski's co-author Diane Smith writes a good portion of the book chronicling her epic struggle with weight loss. The two authors are having a "contest" to develop healthier eating habits.

Mika wants to gain a little weight and a couple of dress sizes and win her struggle over food addiction and body image issues. Diane wants to lose 100 pounds because she weighs over 250 pounds and is in her fifties.

I powered through "Obsessed: America's Food Obsession on My Own" in an afternoon.

I wish I had not purchased this book...I only did as it kept showing up in my recommendations...thanks alot Amazon!I don't even know who this woman is but this book is the same old...you need to lose weight tale with some added bitchiness...ick.I hated the writing style too...each page has a quote in bold print..often the very last sentence you just read.I may be fat,but I am not so stupid that I have to reread what you just wrote...ick!

I don't know the author's television show, have never heard of her and thus no expectations. Basically the author was raised having to make a decision on whether to go to the Sorbonne or Versailles as a teenager; raised in great wealth and privilege; now famous as one can be on the vacuous cable news networks; is size 2; tells her best friend she is fat; writes a book about herself, dropping names; preaching using warmed over rhetoric, and ends with her daughter saying rude things to the author. I borrowed the book from the library and happy I didn't add to the authors finances Also happy I haven't seen the morning show. Too bad about the fat friend, her story was far more interesting.

I think there is real value in this kind of book. It barely scratches the surface of the topic it purports to reveal, but it does show how amazing it is to be thin and how unsuccessful you are if, on top of all your other accomplishments, you aren't thin. So if you want to skip actually reading the book, here's the summary.

Mika is Queen of the Food Nazis, but has a dark secret of her own. She wants to be really thin so she tortures herself to stay 10 pounds below her reasonable weight.

Her place as a thin person gives her the freedom to call her best friend fat. Mika also recommends that you tell your friends they are fat.

Mika tells her friend that she will pay for her friend's weight loss and they will write a book together.

Diets are bad, and lifestyle changes are good. The friend chooses to go on a liquid diet.

The friend, a professional writer herself, gets a couple of essays in the book, but not her name or picture on the cover. Guess who is on the cover? The thin girl.

In the end, Mika gained an amazing eight pounds! What an accomplishment! How great for her. The friend lost some weight too, but we never heard from her again.

Mika - you still don't have a clue. And to everyone else, don't tell your friends they are fat. They already know.
