With respect to “Obsession,” as much as liked both Justin and Kathleen, I thought these two lacked the heat and passion that the other couples definitely had. As for the suspense, I thought it was quite clear early on who the killer was, and since both Justin and Kathleen are two very bright and intelligent people (a surgeon and a detective), it was more than a little hard for me to accept that these two couldn’t figure out who it was when it was staring at them right in their face. Regardless, in my opinion the novel is worthy of the 4 stars I gave it.
Now in his own story, his character still doesn't have any real sex appeal, cute mannerisms or bone-melting moments to drool over.
Not like Anthony (PI) or James (younger brother). Kathleen is a very strong and vibrant person in both her roles (girlfriend + cop).
The story starts off pretty slow, so slow that the first real bit of action comes across as flat and one dimensional.
Then the story starts to build into quick 'blinks' of action and intrigue to a full blown whodunit.
I am sure everyone can figure out (well before the end) who the killer is but it does actually turn into a fairly decent story.
Footnote: so loved the 'guy with the knobbly knees between the edge of a robe and the top of rubber waders (with the double barrel shotgun) wanting to know what in the sam hill was going on'. He was an unexpected addition to a particularly tense moment!
I'm not going to spoil the read by revealing the plot details, but I loved the interaction between Kathleen and her sister-in-law Sadie, especially regarding all those pregnant Murphy women and the prenatal nutrition Nazi. The fact that EVERYBODY knew about Justin's feelings except for Kathleen made for fun dialogue and introducing Justin's brother James was a master stroke. I don't know if he'll continue with the relationship at the book's end that he started since LCON is going into a different series? If she ever revisits the Murphys and the Chamberlains, I can only hope James goes into partnership with Anthony as their dynamic is so mentor-moronic younger guy and Anthony gets a girl of his own? Somebody to enjoy and appreciate his protective side like poor battered Natasha?
