Editorial Reviews

One of the most important piano players in New Orleans, Jon Cleary has been re-working the songs of Allen Toussaint, legendary producer, songwriter, and recording artist. From a capella versions to funky grooves: his re-workings are great and evry entertaining. Recommended. - Green packaging.

If you are a fan of classic NOLA funk and soul written produced and arranged by the master himself,Allen Toussaint, who has inherited and carried on the mantle of "The Bach of Rock", then this CD by one of New Orleans own masterful keyboard players, John Cleary, is definitely a must have!! He has been a fixture himself on the Crescent City scene as long as i can remember, and indeed has recorded an absolute gem ! Some of the tracks are obvious choices ,but he also reaches back into the Toussaint songbook and does a few that are not, notably Poor Boy ,Got to Move!! Love this outing and worth checking out previous discs by Mr. Cleary!! Kudos to Bonnie Raitt for recognizing this very talented musician, as she has recorded some of his music and is obviously a big fan herself!!!!

Just got back from N'awlins Jazz Fest and got to hear Jon at the fest and at a very small music store performing live. I bought this cd at the store and had him sign it. I am already a fan so I know you would think it wouldn't take much for me to like it, and you are probably right. But..... this cd is sooooo great, very rarely do I absolutely love every track on an album but this one is it! This is a must buy, if you do not love it you can hold me personally responsible. A teddy bear of a guy that has put a cd together that every song is a greatest hit! This better put you over the top Jon!!!! Great job!!!!

Jon Cleary and Guest one of the best CD purchased this year. I was just recently introduced to Mr. Cleary and what a great CD to have as a introduction. Backed by the Fabulous Monster Gentlemen, a duo with Bonnie Raitt and Dr. John who could anything go wrong with such a mix.

I was not familiar with Jon Cleary but bought this based on glowing reviews and
an affinity for NOLA music. I was not disappointed.
His version of What Do You Want The Girl to Do was reverent and loving.
I'm ready to try another Jon Cleary disc.

can't be beat - Cleary is a master and owns the legacy in a long line of N'Orleans piano players. His style is not derivative, but rather original within the context of a stride and blues tradition that is unique to the US but in this case played by a Brit who migrated to the center of the music

I got hooked on Jon Cleary after seeing him and the AMG fronting Bonnie Raitt in Sydney about 8 years ago. I would have been OK with it even if Bonnie hadn't come on stage and the AMG played the rest of the gig (Bonnie was still great...!!). Since then I've been an active fan throughout.
I've been waiting for another album since the 1st one (JC & the AMG) came out to be as fonky and rhythmical. I have to say I've suffered a little bit through some of them, most have been less commercial and steeped in New Orleans trad. The first one was more commercial and up-tempo, which appealed to me.
With this album, I now "get it." I'm converted to New Orleans music. JC takes a new spin on Toussaints music, and the production is perfect. His instrumental skills are fantastic.
"Southern Nights" and "What Do You Want The Girl To Do" are almost unrecognisable, but in a fresh and raw emotional way.
There are a couple of fun moments with hints of AMG vocals crooning away - "Occapella", "Popcorn Pop Pop", and a couple of tunes which I can imagine JC sitting behind the drum kit having a blast - "Everything I Do Gonh Be Funky" and "Let's Get Low Down".
If you've always loved JC, then this is a must-have. If, like me, you've struggled sometimes to get a handle on the whole Naw'leans thang, then get this album. You'll finally get it. I've sat through the whole album now 4 times this weekend and there isn't a dud tune on it. This grew on me at first listening, and keeps geting better.
I now love his music more than ever. I'm going to go back and listen to the other albums I've struggled with - "Pin Your Spin" and "Moonburn" and cross my fingers he comes back to New Zealand or Australia with the AMG someday.

The more I play this album, the more I like it. This guy has a real mello style that mixes many types of music, all centered around NOLA. This guy is a transplanted treasure.
