I found this book for a dollar at a thrift store. Can't put it down. I've come to this book with a wide knowledge in the particular subject matter, having myself written a yet unpublished book on this subject as a compilation of essays originally posted to conspiracy forum on reddit. About the occult, verified history, secret societies, etc. I've used a mind mapping tool to triangulate otherwise 'disparate' facts that one could dismiss in a vacuum as 'coincidence theory'. At some point, when looking at this stuff, you realize that it's history, not mystery or coincidence. This book does a fine job of demonstrating this through factual information (which is refreshing) about freemasonry and the occult and their ties to ancient egypt, babylon, rosicrucianism, paganism, and matriarchal societies of the proto-indo-european variety in the oldest known civilizations.
If, for example, the things that are covered by someone like Jay Weidner in his secrets of alchemy film discussing masonic cathedrals and the cross of hendaye; or dan brown's stuff; (or umberto eco's foucault's pendulum, except that it's the nonfiction variety as noted by another reviewer here, a notion I 100% agree with), or even 'ancient aliens' type stuff (no they were masons :) then this is the one for you.
It will get you up to speed by giving you a cultural context to the dizzying array of competing symbols embedded in art, architecture, city planning and municipal buildings that they will NEVER teach you in school because for some reason, they don't really want you to know. I guess because if you really knew then you'd be powerful, and they don't really want so many people to have so much power. That's my belief at least and this book seems to suggest this as well.
The preface of the book suggests that occultism is made by culture to be something unworthy of study, as a kind of 'entrance exam' to a legitimate understanding where most dye-in-the-wool materialists will fail this test, relegating the test itself and those who pass it to be tin foil hat nutjobs who are wasting their time engaging in beliefs and behaviors that are counterproductive because they cannot be empirically useful. But these leftbrainders fail to understand that this study is really a study of our true cultural history.

The Occult Conspiracy by Michael Howard
Reviewed by Tomás E.
After reading this book, I was able to learn a variety of new cultures that have had an impact on our world as we know it. I personally liked reading this novel for several reasons. Primarily, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this text because it was different from any other past book that I had read. It made me think differently about the impact cults and different groups of people can have on the world. Before, when I would think of a cult, I would just think of religions; however, now I see that cults can be more than just a religious group. I have learned that there is a vast range of different groups that all believe in different things.
The book covers specific groups of people all the way to individual people who have had a significant impact on society. Michael Howard, the author, mainly examines the Freemasons, the Knights Templar, the Rosicrucians, the Illuminati, the Assassins, the Thulists, and the Order of the Black Hand. He explores how each of these secret societies played a role in evolving the world. Throughout the novel, Howard also addresses individual people including George Washington, George Bush, Adolf Hitler, Benjamin Franklin, Frederick the Great, and Woodrow Wilson. He analyzes how secret societies influenced these individuals to make the choices they did. Many times, their decisions were more effective and morally correct because of the society they were in. However, in some cases these secret societies caused some of these individuals to make negative choices.
Michael Howard was able to effectively portray the significance and meaning behind these secret societies by writing at an advanced level. The cultures and beliefs that these organizations created are important when learning about our history. Due to this, it is important that the author can write at a high level. Michael Howard wrote effectively by using advanced vocabulary, including pictures throughout the book to improve visualization, and by writing in a formal tone to gain the attention of the readers. By utilizing these strategies, Michael Howard is able to keep the audience intrigued with the unique history of each secret society. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about how cultures impact our world.

This book provides some interesting theories and some good beginning info about the various secret and not-so secret societies. However, it needs to show more clearly where some of the information is coming from. It's one thing to say, so and so was a mason or whatever, but where did this come from? How do you know? The flow is a little dis-jointed and scattered but it holds a reader's interest. It definelty gives some good background and will pique your curiosity to learn more. Coupled with some of Graham Hancock's stuff and you will come away with a really new perspective on history.

Precious book which provides factual insight into the origins, aims and machinations of secret societies. Book is more profound than its insinuating title would suggest. A must read for all rosicrucians, masons and would-be templars. This is a non-fiction edition of Foucault's Pendulum!
