Occult Detective Magazine Mythos Special #2 Paperback – June 22, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
Welcome to the second of our occasional Mythosian Special Issues. Once again we blur the lines by not only including certain Lovecraftian concepts, but also including tales related to Robert W. Chambers’ ‘King in Yellow’ sequence, a brooding sandpit in which a number of Mythos writers have often played.
We’ve actually increased the number of brand new offerings this issue. Nick Marsh opens with ‘The Bibliophile’, a dark reflection on identity, which features the return of a character first seen in his excellent novel, The Express Diaries.
We close with our second completely new story, Marni Scofidio’s full-on, tongue-in-cheek venture into deep Mythos territory, ‘Beyond the Wall of Sheep’.
‘The Lights Beneath the Sea’, Aaron Vlek’s tale of her regular arcane character Geoffrey Vermillion (ODQ #4, ODM #7), with echoes of Innsmouth, is also new in that it has only previously appeared in an online magazine, in an unedited form.
This issue offers a range of new tales and reprints which we found of particular interest. We span the centuries, going from Ed Erdelac’s tale of summoned horror, ‘The Unrepeatables’ in ancient Rome, through Josh Reynolds story of Shakespearian dread, ‘A Tiger’s Heart, A Player’s Hide’, and up to the present-day with Paul StJohn Mackintosh and his bleak contemporary story of cosmic horror and subversion, ‘Drones’.
Along the way, you will find Brandon Barrows’ period story of that classic occult detective Carnacki, and his encounter with a certain forbidden play, in ‘The Madness of Arthur Malbrey’. Slipping further into the twentieth century, we present Mike Chinn’s ‘Sailors of the Skies’, featuring his own recurrent adventurer Damian Paladin (ODQ #2, ODM #0), whilst Gordon Linzner’s ‘Only the Dead’ includes the return of a particularly unpleasant human character from one of H P Lovecraft’s own works.
Which brings us at last to our other contemporary offerings – Erica Ruppert’s disturbing ‘Ex Astris’, James Lowder’s ‘Morning in America’, and Alice Loweecey’s ‘The King in Gray’, in which a hat shop owner is visited by a stranger, who has a message from his dead Aunty Em.
We hope that such a range once more intrigues, shivers, or amuses you.

About the authors

James Lowder’s publications include the bestselling, widely translated dark fantasy novels Prince of Lies and Knight of the Black Rose; short fiction for such anthologies as Shadows Over Baker Street and Tales of the Lost Citadel; game design for TSR, White Wolf, Chaosium, and Steve Jackson Games; as well as comic book scripts, film reviews, and critical essays about pop culture. On the other side of the publisher’s desk, he's served as executive editor for Chaosium and Green Knight Publishing and line editor for the Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft, and Pendragon novel series. He's edited RPG projects, including 1st and 2nd edition D&D releases, and helmed more than a dozen critically acclaimed anthologies, including Madness on the Orient Express, Hobby Games: The 100 Best, and The Munchkin Book. His work has received five Origins Awards and two ENnie Awards, and been a finalist for the International Horror Guild Award and the Stoker Award.

Mike Chinn has had short fiction published in DARK HORIZONS, DARK VALENTINE, DOOMOLOGY: THE DAWNING OF DISASTERS, MORPHEUS TALES URBAN HORROR SPECIAL, NULL IMMORTALIS (NEMONYMOUS 10), KZINE and POSTSCRIPTS. As well as scripting comics for DC Thomson (fourteen issues of the black and white SF/fantasy digest STARBLAZER and an eight-week "Billy the Cat" adventure for the BEANO) he has published two books on how to write comics: WRITING AND ILLUSTRATING THE GRAPHIC NOVEL and CREATE YOUR OWN GRAPHIC NOVEL. His monster-hunting Pulp adventure character, Damian Paladin, first appeared in THE PALADIN MANDATES in 1998, and a second Paladin collection, WALKERS IN SHADOW, was published by Pro Se Productions in 2017. The same imprint published a revised and expanded edition of THE PALADIN MANDATES in 2020. 2015 saw the publication of GIVE ME THESE MOMENTS BACK: a collection of 18 short stories from The Alchemy Press, and a Sherlock Holmes Steampunk mashup, VALLIS TIMORIS, from Fringeworks. In 2017 Parallel Universe Publications released his horror collection, RADIX OMNIUM MALUM & OTHER INCURSIONS. His first Western, REVENGE IS A COLD PISTOL, was published by Pro Se in 2018

John Linwood Grant lives in Yorkshire with a pack of lurchers and a beard. He may also have a family. When he's not chronicling the adventures of Mr Bubbles, the slightly psychotic pony, he writes a range of supernatural, horror and speculative tales, some of which are actually published. You can find him every week on greydogtales.com, often with his dogs.

Marni Scofidio was born in San Francisco, California, and raised near Buffalo, New York. Her modern ghost stories have appeared in semi- and professional magazines and anthologies, including Best New Horror and Year's Best Fantasy & Horror, in four countries. She has been nominated for a British Fantasy Society Award for Short Fiction. She holds a BA (Hons) Design (Ceramics), University of Wales. She is also founder of Poems from the Doghouse.
Scofidio is married to her Welshman Kev, with whom she adopted a heterochromatic staffy cross named Gruff, and is Wicked Stepmother to one stepson. She divides her time between a mountaintop in Wales with more sheep than people, and Malpas, in Cheshire. Her motto in life is Dal Dy Dir, which is Welsh for Stand Your Ground.
