About the Author

    Born in the gritty Navy town of Bremerton, Washington and raised in the south Seattle suburbs, I began writing about as soon as I could hold a pencil. SF editor George Scithers' dictum that all would-be writers have a million words of so of bad prose in them, and have to write it out, pretty much sums up the couple of decades between my first serious attempt to write a book and my first published book, "Paths of Wisdom", which appeared in 1996. These days I live in Cumberland, Maryland with my spouse Sara; serve as presiding officer -- Grand Archdruid is the official title -- of the Ancient Order of Druids in America (AODA), a Druid order founded in 1912; and write in half a dozen nonfiction fields, nearly all of them focused on the revival of forgotten ideas, insights, and traditions of practice from the rubbish heap of history.

i've read many books by john michael greer. his writing style is very accessible and packed with lots of interesting themes and concepts. his books are meant to be read over time. the ideas in them sink slowly into your mind and reveal knowledge over time.

this book is no different in that regard. what makes it unique is that each chapter, 52 in total. have three simple components. a diagram, a brief collection of meditative themes, and a daily affirmation to think about. on face value it appears too simple, even for the advanced occultist. but that simplicity makes it even easier to reflect on, observe, and transform your thinking. it takes all of 5 minutes to read the weekly chapter. don't let that fool you. each chapter will reveal something profound, inspiring, or creative inside you.

Since this book came out I have been working weekly on the lessons. The insight these lessons give is profound in a very earthy way. The work is not complicated and no hard to find materials nor words that dont make sense. This course is simply excellent and I have never seen such important teachings that explain the world and my place in it. Best do it yourself learning in the occult anyone can find IMO.

This is an amazing overview of occult philosophy and the author's specific take on the topic. Obviously, I haven't been able to do the meditations in the book as yet, but Greer 's vision of reality and the hidden structure of our existence is both exciting and beautiful. You can certainly get something out of it by reading and studying the book, but I'm sure that doing the meditations will add a lot more insight. As anyone who's studied occultism by reading JMG's work will already know, engaging with the book properly will take awhile; I'm looking forward to it.
