International Bestseller: The essential guidebook to the history of magic and occultism—“the most interesting, informative, and thought-provoking book on [the occult]” (The Sunday Telegraph)

Colin Wilson’s great classic work is a comprehensive history of mystery and magic. His genius lies in producing a skillful synthesis of the available material; clarifying without simplifying, seeing the occult in the light of reason and reason in the light of the mystical and paranormal. It is a journey of enlightenment—a wide-ranging survey of the whole subject and an insightful exploration of Man’s latent powers.

Republished two years after the author’s death, and with a new foreword by bibliographer Colin Stanley, Wilson brings his own refreshingly optimistic and stimulating interpretation to the worlds of the paranormal, the occult, and the supernatural.

Colin Henry Wilson (26 June 1931 – 5 December 2013) was an English writer, philosopher and novelist. He also wrote widely on true crime, mysticism and the paranormal. Wilson called his philosophy "new existentialism" or "phenomenological existentialism", and maintained his life work was "that of a philosopher, and (his) purpose to create a new and optimistic existentialism".

This tome of ancient knowledge, highly cited historical figures and academic sources, a mixture of science, psychology, occultism and philosophy, has impressed me as a feat fitly described as a "life's work."

If allowed to follow the multitude of rabbit trails presented by Mr. Wilson, all of which deftly begin and end in the same poignant thesis, one's mind will explore an adventurous excursion sure to insight a new vista of awareness hitherto unknown.

In short, read the book and you will not be disappointed.

It’s good through all 700-some pages. Thoroughly entertaining and thought provoking. It sort of acts as a giant reading list. Colin Wilson is sort of a literary DJ. My list is so much longer after reading this

I read this rather lengthy book cover-to-cover with pleasure and recomment it highly - especially to the dyed-in-the-wool materialists with preconceived negative and/or skeptical attitude(s) toward the so-called paranormal or unusual.

A very good overview of Western esoteric themes (now somewhat historically dated), by an author initially quite skeptical of the occult.

5.0 out of 5 stars A year's worth of reading in one book
Reviewed in Canada on March 16, 2023
This book is inches thick and all fascinating.

The detail in this book is hard to find elsewhere, but here, literally all in one book. I bought it for the chapters on Ouspensky and Gurdieff, which were wonderful, but leafing through other chapters, I know it will make for great reading in the year to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Well Researched Book
Reviewed in India on March 31, 2018
This is a well researched look at the Occult. It’s aim appears to convince the sceptic!! For a believer like me....after all in India it’s a part of our basic beliefs....I found it unnecessarily long and repetitive. However it is a very important book and makes some stunning revelations. A definite read for anyone interested in the Occult even if it’s a tad too long!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 2, 2014
An extraordinary, hugely insightful book that not only studies the historical aspect of things, but also injects new ways of thinking and analysing and discussing the occult that is completely removed from sensationalism, ego and the usual guff that is so prevalent in this area. He also gives you references and other books that explore the psychology and reality of what the occult means and how it is a genuine aspect of our positions as sentient beings. Absolutely brilliant, useful, and will get you thinking rather than simply following. He embraces occultism, but backs his belief with serious research into psychology as well as the more esoteric areas. A hugely important book for anyone either studying this area or who want to embrace this aspect into their lives. Cant recommend this enough
