Quaid, with nothing more than a high school diploma, gets offered "Commander School"?
Okay, there is no such thing as "Commander school" in the Navy. There's Officers Candidate School. And there's almost ZERO chance that Quaid would even qualify while still in boot camp at Great Lakes.
But the kicker that finishes it off for me is the elderly lady whose Navy SEAL husband died on a deployment in Iraq 41 YEARS ago, when the US had just gotten out of Viet Nam! Considering the US didn't deploy ANY personnel to Iraq until January 1991, her unborn child would have been conceived in 1990, making him no older than 26!
Am I being nit picky? Probably. But it's the complete lack of effort on the author's part to do the most basic research that automatically gets my antenna up. So far the emotions & actions of Quaid, Hendlee, Jason, Nicola, Gemma, Clive & Bryan are shallow, selfish & incredibly stupid. And I paused reading at 55% to write this review in the hopes of sparing at least ONE reader from buying this! It was a FREE read, so at least I wasn't out any money, but if you're thinking of spending any money to buy this book ~ DON'T!!
UPDATE: I finished reading the book & I've downgraded this to one star. The plot ending is absurd & the characters show no integrity whatsoever. The epilogue was both totally predictable as well as implausible. And there are even MORE Navy personnel mistakes.
I'm deleting it from my library.
This story pulled me in from the synopsis on the back of the book! I felt a connection with these characters that I've never felt with any other book. I myself fell in love with someone at a young age and lost touch with them... Well, I can't say much more without giving things away! ;)
But... I cried. Not just a little cry either! I woke my husband up crying at one point, so, bring some tissues! ;) Maybe a glass of wine was consumed while reading this also... I don't remember! ;) All I know is I had this book read within the matter of a few days. It pulled me in and didn't let go!
I am giving this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars. Just because I did find myself jumping back in the story a few times because it felt at times things were lapsed over. But, all in all. I love the story! Love the characters, love the dynamic of the story.
Delisa, you have a reader in me! ;)

Blighted by tragedy, Hendlee is strong and loyal; her friends mean everything to her. Quaid looks out for her but now she wants more, even though he is hell bent on leaving their small town behind, maybe forever. Quaid needs to satisfy his wanderlust and the Navy is the perfect way. He is willing to deny his feelings for Hendlee until he’s achieved his ambition. Hormones intervene but he still leaves, promising to return. Fate and human nature intrude and make a happy ever after unlikely but fate hasn’t finished with Hendlee and Quaid yet. The romance is sensual and the dialogue authentic and contemporary. The plot is simple and a little predictable but I liked that. There are enough twists to keep me turning the pages and plenty of angst and lost opportunity. The ending is satisfying and I look forward to finding out what happens to Hendlee’s other friends.
I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.
Quaid loves his best friend more than anything. The last thing he wants though is ti stay in Benton Creek. He wants to join the Navy and see the world. They vow to stay together but lies tear them apart. Will they find their way back to each other?
At first I was so disgusted with the way Quaid handled things. I couldn't believe he let things go the way they did. I hated the way he treated Hendlee all those years later. I did love how honest he was about his past with his girlfriend. He was very open with her about his relationship with Hendlee and what he thought happened.
Hendlee was very strong to handle things the way she did. She never stopped loving Quaid and it was difficult seeing him again, but she was determined to get answers. The two have a lot to fight through if they want to overcome the past. Overall, this was a great book. Its an amazing lifelong friends to great loves story. I loved the alternating pov and the supporting characters. I can't wait to read Gemma and Clive's story in The Past Between Us. I admired them in this book with how they were there for both of their friends and supported them.
