The Go-Betweens, God bless them, make the case against pop artists becoming stars, even as they sort of, kind of clamor for that lofty status. Their middling (or less) sales have left their musical instincts unsullied, their normalcy intact, their perspectives those of relatively honest, working artists/craftsmen. They don't write missives from inside the bubble, wearying poor listeners with commentary on the trappings of fame or battles with record labels. No, they are mature, grown-up human beings and incisive enough to keep even their nostalgia -- a recognizable component from "Cattle and Cane" in the early years to "Darlinghurst Nights" on this record -- sounding sharply drawn and far from maudlin. As for "Oceans Apart," the bulletin boards are largely accurate: The sound leaves much to be desired. How the producer of the positively floating-on-air "16 Lovers Lane" could go ahead and compress the devil out of this one is beyond me. They say that's a bid for radio, but I'll be damned if I know how, and if it is a bid for radio, well, Mssrs. Forster and McLennan are pushing, what? 50? and still have a jaundiced eye on the airwaves? More power to them. Other than the production, which, don't get my wrong, is tolerable, this is a shimmering, irresistable effort, the best of the comebacks. Forster's songs are best, but McLennan's warm up after repeated listenings. They are both a couple of the prime tunesmiths of our times: They rock, they do quiet and introspective, that paint a picture with a phrase, they tell little jokes, they are open and sometimes inscrutable. In short, real people, and while sometimes McLennan's songcraft shows its seams and machinery and slight obviousness, Forster is endlessly engrossing. Top-shelf stuff for any kind of pop fan and minus one star only for the sound.

The go-betweens is the kind of band that always has you wanting to hear its next cd. Its fans are the kind of people who always eagerly anticipate every release and every concert. To understand this you have to listen to the cds. Once you have listened you want to listen to them again, and you want to listen to everything they've done as individuals and as a band. Oceans apart satisfies the gobees jones. Each cd they've put out since they've gotten back together in 1999 has gone in new directions, but still maintains the basic reasons why we love them in the first place. Robert has his stories and Grant has his melodies. Start here or start somewhere else but start somewhere.

I bought this record after hearing the song Here Comes a City on the radio several times. I dug it because it had kind of a weird feeling that reminded me of the talking heads.

I had never listened to this band before.. and I think maybe I should have before I bought Oceans Apart. It's a pretty good record but really not what I was expecting. Not nearly as good as Here Comes A City would have led me to believe.

Inspired Aussie jangle

Jangle pop from just about the best, most lyrical Australian songsmiths ever. I guess these guys are part of the same movement that spawned REM, Dunedin jangle pop and others. Its like a continuation of music started by the Byrds, picked up by Big Star and then carried to all parts of the world by Teenage Fanclub, The Bats/Clean, Replacements and of course the Go-Betweens. This particular album is from their re-union. A resumption that proved that they lost nothing in the 12 year break and were still the same eloquent partnership as ever. Criminally under-rated genius. The Go Betweens 3rd album post re-union, has them back at the top of their game with a collection of 10 classic slices of Australiana. And two or three which belong right at the top of the Go-Betweens portfolio of songs. songs like Boundary Hunter, Darlinghurst Nights, are brilliant, they take us on more the Go Betweens journey, and unlike Friends of Rachel Worth, seem to sound exactly like the Go-Betweens of Lindy Morrison/Amanda Brown days. The opener, Here Comes the City is a bit, Talking Heads, "Life During Wartime" and gets the album off to a rollicking start. Followed by Finding You starting off acoustic and segues into a classic alt/rock/pop singalong joy. The Autobiographical (Forster) Born to a Family is next and up front and amusing as it is, only sets the platform for whats to come. No Reason to Cry, Darlinghurst Nights and the remaining three songs guarantee a strong, emotionally resonant completion to an album which staggeringly comes some 29 years into their careers. Absolutely Brilliant.

Questo Oceans Apart e' un disco veramente compatto bellissimo dall'inizio alla fine,si potrebbe dire il disco della maturita'. Unico neo mancano un po' quelle atmosfere crepuscolari che avevano caratterizzato i lavori precedenti,ma comunque come dicevo disco veramente bello da non perdere per chi li ha sempre seguiti.

Les Go Betweens, duo australien composé de Robert Forster et Grant Mac Lennan, ont mis plus de dix ans, de la fin des années 1970 à 1988 pour aboutir dans leur album « 16's lovers lane » a une certaine perfection dans le genre pop folk. Puis ils ont connu une longue période de séparation de 1990 à 2000, se sont reformés et ont enregistré trois albums.
« Oceans apart » , qui date de 2005, est définitivement le dernier puisque Grant Mac Lennan est décédé en 2006.
Pour de nombreux groupes avec ce type de parcours, les dernières aeuvres sont rapiécées, fades et inintéressantes. Les Go-Betweens font totalement exception à cette généralité.
« Oceans apart » est d'une qualité équivalente à « 16's lovers lane » : tous les titres sont bons, 6 ou 7 exceptionnels. 17 ans après, le charme et la richesse des mélodies, la perfection des arrangements et les qualités instrumentales vous laissent sur un nuage.
Il est invraisemblable que cet album ne soit pas plus connu en France, ni plus diffusé.
En plus la première édition contient un disque bonus de 6 titres live...
Si vous aimez ce style musical, n'hésitez pas à acheter « Oceans apart », il est extraordinaire

復活後は3枚目となる今作ですが。基本的にやっていることは変わらない人達ですので、今作もしかり。ってな感じです。老舗の味とでも申しましょうか。
ジャケの印象は今回なんか暗い感じですが、元々そんなに明るいバンドじゃありませんからね。ただ今作は前作、前々作に感じられたリラックスムードは若干後退気味かも。1曲目から4枚目あたりにも通じるクールな佇まい。ニューウェイブ的とも言えますね。流石、元祖世代。
今作では二人のソングライティングはますます近づいていて、どちらがどちらの歌を歌っているのか分からないほどです。それは彼らの個性が薄まったわけでは決してなく、彼ら二人が「同じ理想」の音を奏でられるようになってきたからなんではないでしょうか。再結成は、「必然」というより「自然」なことだったのです。
