Installation was very easy, just pull the old plastic frame out of the Oculus and snap the new one in. I did have to remove the padding and reattach it to the frame (uses Velcro) due to it being misaligned out of the box but not an issue since it's easy to do. Just peel it off and reattach keeping the edges aligned as best as possible.
I'm not a big fan of the cloth cover, it's nice and soft and adds to the comfort level but the fit is just off. It fits relatively well in the forehead area but around the nose it just kind of floats which I find annoying. Some people probably won't mind but a pad with this material sewn on would be much better. I know it's intended to be removable for washing but sew it on and sell for $10 and I'd be buying new ones every so often vs. washing.
If you take issue with nose gap be aware this unit increases it over the original and provides no way to adjust for it. That would have been a nice addition, maybe in a future version? Of course it depends on the shape of your nose and whether you mind nose gap at all. Some people will probably enjoy the additional space provided over the original.
Overall I think this was worth the upgrade just for the increased comfort.
Removing and reattaching the padding is tricky because it's hard to center it on the facial interface "velcro". I wish it had a center mark on it.
But the cushion feels great, it feels a little sticky because it's leather but feels like a pillow on your face instead of the scratchy/stingy foam.
I used to get deep lines outlined in red around my eyes. Properly fitted the Rift had always been too loose on my face and the sweet spot too low. I always had to pull the side straps tighter and tilt it down a notch to see the sweet spot--I guess my forehead doesn't stick out enough compared to others. Now with the VR Cover thin pads, the worst I get is a slight indentation on my cheeks, no marks on my forehead anymore. This padding has more grip so I don't have to keep the headset so tightly strapped anymore.
The fabric cover I just tossed aside, no need for it, it's only me using it. I'll give it a try later, but I'm loving it so far!
