'"Oddities & Entities" by Roland Allnach. . .I have never encountered any other stories that even approach the situations these present with authority and authenticity. If I could boil down my perception of this book into a single word, that word would be WOW!' - Lee Ashford, Readers Favorite
"Oddities & Entities"...is completely different from anything I have ever read before. The writing is very descriptive, rendering the spooky and unsettling in full detail. The stories often spend a good amount of time developing the world before they set off properly into the thick of things. The setup can sometimes be a little too slow, making one feel impatient. "Boneview" sets the tone nicely by following the life of Allison, a young girl who can see through people to their bones. A mysterious creature shes been able to see since infancy also wants something from her, and her life only becomes stranger from there. It has a straightforwardness about it that juxtaposed the unusual events. Each story has shades of more than horror in it; romance, drama, psychology, even dark humor. The protagonists are also very different, and writing techniques utilized also vary.
The cover is a bit plain, but don't be fooled. There is some great horror fiction within that might keep you up at night.
In my opinion, this author’s writing style and imagination rivals the works of Steven King. While reading these stories, I was totally aware that each subject could never be real. However, they made you think, what if it did become real. Hats off to Mr. Allnach. I was thoroughly entertained.
I am a sucker for a spooky story, particularly during the month of October, so when I was given the chance to read this collection, I jumped at it. A long time fan of the horror genre, something needs to be pretty innovative to really knock my socks off. And innovative does not begin to describe these stories. They were deliciously disturbing, leaving the reader to wonder about the world around you. What lurks in the shadows and the recesses of our minds? Those papery whispers that we hear late at night, are they the wind, or something far more sinister?
Each story is thoroughly developed, the characters rich, the dialog intimate and realistic, the plotlines solid. These stories changed the way I thought about the world around me, the truths I believed, and the explanations I accepted. The stories are dark, and raw, and unlike anything I have ever read. I think fans of traditional horror and dark gothic literature will like the book, but it is so different that I think it could help convert some new horror fans as well.
