Product description
ATLUS x Vanillaware, the team behind the hit side-scrolling action game Dragon's Crown releases a new authentic HD project to recreate and perfect the PS2 classic Odin Sphere - a 2D action RPG with Norse Mythology roots. Told in five tales from the perspectives of five unique protagonists, Odin Sphere Leifthrasir expresses the original game with glorious HD graphics in Vanillaware's renowned style. The kingdom of Valentine was the most powerful country on the continent of Erion. Its people thrived using the magical power of the Crystallization Cauldron, but it was destroyed in one fateful night. And so, a war over the now master-less Cauldron has begun, involving all the nations of the land and growing more intense by the day. Is the End near, as the Prophecy states?

The game features an interesting, character-driven story that revolves around warring kingdoms. As the player, you control one of five characters at a time, driving them through their narrative story. When you complete the story of one character, the second unlocks. When the second is completed, the third unlocks ... this pattern repeats until you complete all five characters stories. Each story helps explain all sides of the conflict, and each new story does a great job of explaining in the gaps/holes of other stories, or giving you insight as to what happens from the other sides point of view. The events of one character might take place before the subsequent character's, or during them, or after them (timeline wise). By the end, you are treated to an easy to follow yet complex and engaging story that unfolds beautifully.
The game play is fluid, quick, and responsive. It's basically a side-scrolling action game that boasts combo-based attack systems, spells, and RPG character leveling/skills. One unique thing about the game is that the majority of your experience comes from preparing food. While you do get XP from killing enemies, eating food is your primary source. It's easy to pick up and dedicated players can really maximize leveling up using the combine alchemy system. All-in-all, as a person who generally dislikes food and alchemy in games, I love it in Odin Sphere. In terms of combat, each character is truly unique yet still maintains similar elements. You'll start at level 1 with each character when their story begins, but the game does a good job of giving you a feel for their play style before throwing you into the grinder.
Overall, if your an RPG fan, Odin Sphere is one of those games you should definitely play. A full play through will net around 30-40 hours. The game is linear in terms of navigating you through it, though you are free to revisit battlegrounds to acquire more gold, items, and XP to power level your character. However, don't expect some large, open-ended experience. This game is not like that. I consider it a story-driven narrative with a fun and enjoyable combat system. You are either listening to characters talk, or you are killing things. There's not much in between the two.
Beautiful world and art design. It keeps me coming back even through repetition.
Good story.
Good skills and leveling system.
Good map design
Potion system is nice.
Characters are interesting.
In general, I love this game, as well as their others. Its actually worth buying at full price.
I just wish I could pick which story I wanted to do from the beginning rather than unlocking them slowly after each character's story. Since the story isn't told chronologically and it jumps around the timeline, I feel like being able to freely switch between the characters wouldn't have been that much of a stretch.
That being said, I had such a good time with it that I'm already in my second playthrough. It really is a great game.
Game is very repetitive - you will find yourself fighting the same bosses multiple times. Additionally, once you get certain moves you'll find out what works the best and not use any of the other available moves.
Plus the game is gorgeous and tons of fun.
Beautiful graphic. Adjustable difficulty to create just right amount of challenge for you.
Best part is Story. This game tells 5 separate stories based on fairy tales of old. Which all interconnect to create one massive overarching story.
Oh, back ground music is nice too.
