I consider this to be very much like early Harry Potter stuff, but a bit more whimsical, specifically in the story-telling style that feels more kid-friendly (except maybe the witch threatening death to the protagonist, kind of “Wicked Witch of the West” reminiscent). However, it's complex enough with many characters to entertain any level of reader. There are helpful titles in bold to remind you of specific characters throughout to keep track.
There did seem to be less magic, or fewer specific references, but more interactions with animals, which gives it it's own feel apart from the HP parallels. This also looks to be the first of a series; it’s early on – who knows what’s to come?!
The children are an interesting bunch, though we don’t find out much about them. The forest animals range from the real to the mythical, bringing an element of fantasy to the story.
The tension doesn’t really kick in until the last few chapters. From there, it has the potential to become an exciting battle of good versus evil as Ben and his friends fight to save the Earth from those who would destroy it.
The story is suitable for kids in the 8-10 age group.
