Now you can enjoy Tivoli Audio's Model One's trademark sound quality and reception outdoors with the PAL Portable Audio Laboratory AM/FM Radio. Its 2.5" magnetically shielded driver and rubberized cabinet are weather resistant, so your PAL can keep you company by the pool or the patio. Its rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride battery pack has no memory and fully charges in about 3 hours, providing up to 16 hours of cordless playback. The clever little green LED serves as both a power and battery status indicator. Features include a geared-down 5:1ratio analog tuning dial for accurate tuning and an auxiliary input to connect an iPod, MP3 player, or portable CD player for exceptional portable playback. It also plays MP3 files wirelessly when transmitted from your MP3 player via the Griffin iTrip or Belkin FM transmitter. It includes a stereo headphone output for private listening (headphones not included), or can be used as a recording output, or to use the PAL as a high-quality outboard tuner with your home audio system. The Henry Kloss designed tuner features Automatic Frequency Control (AFC) which locks on to the center of the station for best reception and lowest distortion, while the adjustable telescoping FM antenna extends and rotates for improved FM reception (there is also a built-in AM antenna). PAL includes rubber gasket covered i/o ports to keep sand and water out of the unit and plated hardware to withstand the elements. It includes an AC adapter for home use and for the built in battery recharging system. An optional carry bag is also available to take your PAL on the go.

I have a couple of table radios from Tivoli that I like quite well. I also very much like the comparable model (which I also have) from Boston Acoustics. As for the PAL, this is something I bought specifically to have a portable, self-contained device to play audio from my laptop from in presentations. (It also works very well to plug in any MP3 player the same way, but stereo-mini to stereo-mini plug cable.) The sound for music is not quite as good as the Inmotion IM3 which I also have and use similarly, but it's as good or better for audio in general, ruggedness, and loudness for presenting in a room. The radio is also superb, and the volume controls apparently in use on the PALs appear to me to be better in quality than on the table radios that Tivoli makes (where the volume control has a very sharp ramp up in loudness and is harder to regulate well for lower volume listening). Yes, I'm a geek.

Anyway, the PAL is a splendid device. Does all as promised with style, attractive looks, high quality audio, and with at least the appearance (and I bet the actuality) of ruggedness.

Tivoli PAL Works

This small radio has excellent tone, clarity and available volume. It's on-battery time has so far always been adequate for hours of listening and it recharges rapidly.

It is particularly good at picking up fringe FM stations and holding signal while rejecting interference.

The soft plastic covering seems to reduce vibration and, subjectively speaking, "feels" good to the touch.

One great feature is its auxiliary input which allow a mini plug out from a computer to a mini plug into the aux input of the PAL. The result is loud, clear hearing of any internet accessible audio source. I listen to fm stations in California Tucson Philadelphia, etc. with ease. Video on the net yields excellent audio by this method.

PS I have two of them, one for some years.

I bought this product to play MP3s through my Ipod at work. However, I also use it to listen to the radio. The tuner is great because I am now able to listen to all of the FM stations in my area. With my old radio, I was only able to get one station at work. I also bought a second Tivoli at home for the same purpose and the battery runs for a very long time without recharging. This gives me the ability to take the Tivoli into any room and also allows me to listen to my ipod without the headphones.

Lives up to the hype

Since moving away from New York City, I've missed hearing the local sport teams on radio. I've tried to pick up the AM stations where I live now (outside of Cleveland) without luck until now. This great looking, great sounding radio has no trouble picking out AM radio station located over 350 miles from where its being transmitted. Local FM stations sound amazing too! Highly recommended if you want to own the best in its class.

Big Sound from Small Radio

I've had the Tivoli PAL for three years now and enjoy the way it easily fills my living room while I play yoga. The reception, stronger than my Tivoli Songbook, is reliably strong. The auxiliary input allows me to play an iPod through the speaker. The rubber coating allows me to play it outside under the hot sun while I'm sunbathing. The battery recharges automatically. In 3 years, I haven't had to replace the battery. For an analog radio, you can't beat the PAL. Remember, it's not digital and contains no presets so you have to find the "sweet spot" every time you tune your station. For a digital radio with presets, you might want to check out the Grundig G5, also called the Eton E5, or the less expensive (and older but equally good) Grundig G4000.

Easy to Fall in Love With

Of all my portable radios, including the Tivoli Songbook, the PAL has my richest, warmest sounding speaker. I'd give reception a B plus compared to my Kaito 1103 and Grundig G4000. The biggest downside is no presets. You have to find the sweet spot every time you tune in a desired radio station. If you want, you can "upgrade" this nice radio by connecting a ten-dollar audio cable to auxilary input of the PAL and the output of the Kaito 1103 (about 90 dollars), using the PAL as a speaker and the 1103 as the best reception radio you'll ever have.

Great Radio - Bad Battery

As advertised, the PAL is the perfect porch radio. For its size and portability, the sound quality is outstanding. Reception is as good or better than any other portable I own, especially Walkman style units. But don't stray too far from the house for very long. I'm very disappointed with the battery performance of my unit. Initially I had a problem getting the battery charged. After several recommendations provided willingly by Tivoli Audio staff, I finally got the battery charged but it has never held a charge for very long. Early on, on a full charge, my PAL would play for the better part of a day (at relatively low volume) but now (the unit is about a year old) I'm lucky if it runs for much more than an hour before that battery calls it quits. I'm hoping a new battery will remedy the situation.

The hype is all true. This is an amazing sounding radio, compact yet powerful. Reception (for me where I am at least) is crisp and clear, whilst the level of sound projection is to die for-I was amazed by the sheer level of volume when I first turned it on. The lack of presets means in practice that choice is in your hands, the way it should be, and the dial is very smooth at tuning. At the same time as just being way more than loud enough, the radio's sound is also rich and rounded however, with no trace of hiss, static or sharpness that I could hear, and the wood definitely adds some warmth. Worth every penny, this is simply the best of it's kind I think, check out the manufacturer's website.

Auch ich habe mir zwei Tivoli Radio's gekauft. Eines davon hat jetzt, pünktlich nach Ablauf der Garantie, seinen Geist aufgegeben und hält den Sender nicht mehr. Es ist eine permanente Nachjustierung notwendig und es macht keinen Spaß mehr damit Radio zu hören. Ich werde versuchen das Radio an den Hersteller zu schicken, vielleicht bringt das ja was. Ich werde berichten.

Ich war etwas verunsichert, da einige Rezensionen von mittlerer Qualität und einem dauerhaften Hintergrundrauschen kündeten. Derartiges musste ich nicht feststellen. Die Verarbeitung macht einen sehr sauberen Eindruck und der Klang ist einfach unglaublich. Dass ein so winziges Gerät das kann, was das Model One kann, hätte ich nicht geglaubt. Zum Design gibt's nicht viel zu sagen. Eine unübertroffene Ikone! Das komplette Gegenstück zum üblichen digitalen Overkill. ABER: Man kauft sich dieses relativ teure Radio, um ein wirklich stilvolles, kleines Stück Designgeschichte sein Eigen nennen zu dürfen. Eben um etwas Besonderes zu haben. Und dann steht da "Made ich China". Na toll...
Aber abgesehen von diesem eher irrationalen Gedanken macht das Gerät einfach nur viel Freude.
