Update: Microsoft updated the Office 2013 license. You may now transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you, but not more than one time every 90 days (except due to hardware failure, in which case you may transfer sooner). If you transfer the software to another computer, that other computer becomes the "licensed computer." The Office 365 Subscription products work on up to 5 PCs, Macs, and select mobile devices without license transferability limitations.

Office Professional 2013

All of Microsoft's applications for use on one PC.

Office Professional 2013 is designed to help you create and communicate faster with time saving features and a clean, modern look. Plus, you can save your documents in the cloud on SkyDrive and access them virtually anywhere.

What’s new in this release of Office?

The 2013 versions of familiar Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint include new features that help you create, communicate and work efficiently from virtually anywhere. In addition to updating the traditional Office suites, Microsoft has developed brand new subscription versions of Office, specifically designed around the way customers use Office. Each new subscription offer will include the 2013 versions of the Office applications, for example Word, Excel and PowerPoint, plus cloud services such as Skype world minutes and online storage with SkyDrive.

Subscribers will also receive future rights to version upgrades as well as per-use rights across multiple PCs or Macs and select mobile devices.1 Note: The Office applications you can use across PCs, Macs and other devices vary by platform.

1Visit www.office.com/information for a current list of devices. Internet connection required. Internet and mobile telephone usage charges may apply.

What is the difference between the Office 2013 suites and Office 365 plans?

Microsoft Office is still the name Microsoft uses for its familiar productivity software. Office suites have traditionally included applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. All Office 2013 suites include the latest versions of the applications, for use on a single PC.

Microsoft uses the name “Office 365” for products that include cloud services, such as additional SkyDrive online storage, Skype minutes for home use, Lync web conferencing or Exchange Online hosted email for businesses. Cloud services are features that are enabled over the Internet. Most Office 365 plans also include the full-featured Office 2013 applications, which users can install across multiple computers and devices. All Office 365 products, such as Office 365 Home Premium, are paid for on a subscription basis, annually. Active subscribers will receive future rights to version upgrades as a benefit of their subscription. Entitlements vary by product.

What it includes:

  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Access, and Publisher.
  • Office on one PC for business use.
  • One time purchase for the life of your PC; non-transferrable.
  • 7 GB of online storage in SkyDrive.
  • Free Office Web Apps1 for accessing, editing, and sharing documents.
  • An improved user interface optimized for a keyboard, pen, or touchscreen.

If you have to pay the full retail price, Office 2013 does not offer enough improvements to take on the hassle of moving to the new version (which I deliberately did not call "upgrading"). If you are already using the Office 2010 suite, deliberate carefully about both the cash outlay and the tweaking it will take to get you back to the customizations you like.

I installed Office 2013 Professional on an ASUS laptop computer with a recently re-installed Windows 7 (Home Premium) OS, a 1.3 GHZ processor and 4 GB RAM (64-bit environment).

At installation, I was promoted to first remove my existing Office 2010 suite. After doing so, installation of Office 2013 took approximately 10 minutes. Although cosmetic changes appear in the user interface (mostly in a "flattening" of controls on the toolbars), the overall presentation will be familiar to users of Office 2010.

Hint: if you have many commands placed in your Office 2010 applications Quick Access Toolbars, export them before you uninstall. You can later import them into the 2013 programs. Why this couldn't be scripted into the 2013 install process (along with removal of the earlier version) is another question.

Microsoft claims an array of new features in Office 2013. The biggest one that is readily apparent is that Microsoft would love for you to join them on the cloud via its online SkyDrive and Office 365 subscription services. Oh please. I already bought the productivity suite, and could have done without the additional marketing. Plus: every single time you look at the Office Ribbon, the big "Sign In" button will be visible on the right side. Bad idea, Office team: please don't add clutter to an already complicated user interface.

If you're thinking of running Office on a portable PC, stick with 2010. While you may think you're buying a full retail copy of 2013, they've changed the licensing such that if your computer dies (dropped, spilled water on it, just expires) and you have to get a replacement, you CANNOT install the same copy of Office onto it. You have to buy Office all over again. Even if you've got an accident/damage protection plan on your laptop/notebook, you'll still have to fork out $400 for the privilege of reinstalling software you already bought. Outrageous!

    Dear Amazon Shopper,

Thank you for your feedback and sorry for the inconvenience. Effective immediately, we have changed the licensing terms to allow you to transfer the software from one computer to another. We made this decision based on your feedback and the feedback of other customers who asked for additional flexibility in this area. For more information, please visit http://bit.ly/Xr8OPk

First off, I have been using Microsoft Word professionally since its inception, approximately 8-14 hours a day since the days of Works. Secondly, I am on an utterly fantastic computer, so the bugs I'm experiencing are NOT my hardware. Thirdly, and I think this sums it up for all longtime Windows users: They did to Microsoft Word what they did to Windows with Windows 8. There was absolutely no reason Microsoft had to do this to such a successful and GOOD product.

Like I said, I have been using Word professionally since its inception, and have been very happy with each successive incarnation...until now. Basically, what has been done with this new Office Professional is they've turned the professional standard for writers everywhere (my profession, which I've been doing full time for the last 20 years) into a marketing technique to collect email addresses, push products and Cloud services, and force people to play by Microsoft's rules...for more money and less performance. And I can use this on only 1 computer? For $400? Are you serious? And not only are they doing to Microsoft Word what they did to Windows with Windows 8, but they're making it impossible to buy legitimate previous versions that worked. They took something that worked, and worked GOOD, and turned it into a non-performing, aggravating, frustrating piece of C**P that you HAVE to buy because they have forced retailers to stop selling all previous versions, leaving the consumer with the option to either buy this program that is a very poorly veiled attempt to take on Apple and Google (and FAILING, I might add...

Just upgraded from 2010 Pro to 2013 pro. Bad move. Save, time, money, and your eyes and don't go to 2013. I agree with all of the other one star reviews here (and elsewhere).

First seems like MS is trying to create their own walled garden and collection of inmates like Apple. Nothing they offer is worth the price, or the discomfort I experienced with this product.

My big complaint, and for me a deal breaker, is the lack of a comfortable display theme. They only offer 3: White, Light Gray, Dark Gray. Don't be fooled. Dark Gray isn't at all dark. All the choices are overly bright, lack contrast, and are just hard to look at for any length of time. I've tried every combination of theme, brightness, and contrast on three different LED and laptop displays. I just can't work with this. If you own a business don't buy this. If I worked for you, I'd complain to OSHA. It's torture trying to use these screens. My eyes can't take it. The darker theme in 2010 worked well for me. Where did it go? This design choice made by MS is baffling and disappointing. Seems like a trivial fix for them, but reading 5 months worth of many complaints on the MS forums, it does not appear MS is going to respond. My response now is going to be to send it back.
