I've owned 3D Game Studio for several years and hadn't seen an English language book, so I picked this up with some excitement. I've created art assets and done some level design in 3DGS but for the most part, I haven't tackled the programming in any significant way. I mention this since, after several years of waiting, I approached the book with some preconceptions about what it should be. Because of this it is not surprising it initially fell short of the 'vision' I had in my brain of a guru-like book of ultimate 3DGS wisdom. I've since taken a step back, considered what other software products 'official guides' were like and prepared what I hope is a balanced review. This is important since whether you love, or just like this book, is going to depend on what you expected out of it.

In my opinion this book is a good 'light' introduction to 3DGS and game programming concepts. In review of other official guides I find they range from minimalist, "hello world" type books -that seem to have been created only to satisfy customer expectation of a manual- to full fledged product bibles crammed with every detail. This book, like most, falls somewhere in-between. If you are brand new to 3DGS, or a student taking a first course on game programming, you'll find that the author has taken considerable effort to provide helpful details about game history, interface design, and playability issues; he also touches on game psychology, the importance of story and marketing. All of these are essential concepts.

The book is well written, easy to understand and adequately illustrated. The chapters on modeling using MED (the 3D Game Studio model editor), skinning and animating your model are satisfactory.

Being the 'official' game studio book you'd figure there would be a lot better coverage of this product. It almost seems as there are no chapters on creating a game but more chapters about what games are, how other games have been a success and so on. In fact most of Michal Duggans books start this way. Very easy reading and was not bad to read. But way to much detail on things the avaerage buyer of this book could care less about. When I purchased this book I wanted 3D Game Studio coverage. Not coverage on different types of games, what makes a character memorable, etc. If I wanted a book on game types or what goes into making a game, I would of purchased that book. I wanted this book to gain knowledge of 3D Game Studio, and thats it.

I would recommend this book to someone starting out, it does show you how to create basic indoor scenes, as well as how to model a 3D character in the MED that ships with 3DGame Studio. For a beginner, this is a good pick. For a season person who knows there way around, and can make a basic level with some cutomization look elsewhere.

Hello,

This book seems to cover c-script, the built in libraries the 3D Game Studio compiler uses. If you want to begin where the author left off with the couple of demos, you will be able to work with the many 3D Model the CD-ROM includes. The 3D Model, even has its own editor, you can change the model-skins, their animation movement frames, etc. Although, the 3D Game Studio version may be based on C-Script, it even can be configured to Lite-C. You will basically, have to purchase Sam's Teach yourelf C in 21 days to get the understanding of it. However, if you just wish to remain with the C-Scripting, then you could still work with this, but Lite-C is recemmended. The Application's, if purchased offers user support forum. You could log on and read some of the forum even if you did not buy it yet.

This book is fantastic. I've read it through four times now and and learned much from it. The documentation that comes with Gamestudio and the tutorials provided on the company site is conflicting, confusing, poorly translated, and often too technical for a beginner like me, so this book is a blessing. The accompanying CD that comes with this book not only has lesson files, but hundreds of models, sfx, scripts and textures that can be used in Gamestudio. The only thing that prevents my giving it 5 stars is the fact that it was written for version 6 of the software and not for the current version 7, but I had no problem finding my way around the software with it as my guide, since the various editors still work the same in both versions. The book makes no assumptions about previous programming experience.
