Editorial Reviews

Review

“What Lamaze offers women isn’t a ‘method’ but rather the confidence to stop worrying and start believing that a woman’s body does birth best, and that every woman deserves patient, gentle, unwavering support through this process. This book gives women something new to ‘expect’: to be amazed at our own power and strength.”

—Jennifer Block, author of Pushed: The Painful Truth About Childbirth and Modern Maternity Care

“This is a superb book. Though it’s called ‘official,’ it isn’t written in bureaucratic language and isn’t heaped with instructions. It’s humane, funny, tender, down-to-earth and joyful. Essential reading for all pregnant women who seek autonomy in childbirth.”

—Sheila Kitzinger, author of The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth

The Official Lamaze Guide: Giving Birth with Confidence is the first book that every pregnant woman should read before she makes any decisions about her maternity care. This book is a breath of fresh air. By following these explanations and recommendations women will gain the best chance of having a normal, natural, healthy, and empowering birth.”

—Marshall Klaus, MD, and Phyllis Klaus, MFT, CSW, authors of The Doula Book, Your Amazing Newborn, and Bonding

“This book is a wonderful resource that provides information, knowledge, and skills to expectant parents who want to play a central role in their children’s births.”

—Penny Simkin, coauthor of Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn

“At last there is a resource that emphasizes normal birth and increases parents’ confidence. The honest information and reassuring tone of the authors truly get to the heart of women’s fears and allow them to explore those fears in a safe way. The book contains life skills such as communication and negotiation and tells the simple story of birth in a manner that left me in awe. I wish I had been able to share this book with expectant families during my first seventeen years of teaching and being a doula.”

—Ann Grauer, LCCE, CD(DONA), PCD(DONA), past president of DONA International

The Official Lamaze Guide: Giving Birth with Confidence is one of the rare books today containing an unapologetically woman-centered view of birth…. The authors strongly advocate natural birth…. They emphasize that women’s bodies are beautifully designed to grow, birth, and nurture babies. The Official Lamaze Guide…should be in every [pregnant mother’s] hands.”

—Jane Pincus, BA, MAT, MFA, Birth: Issues in Perinatal Care

“Warm and wise, honest yet reassuring, chock full of information, and based on the latest and best research—any pregnant woman who wants a normal birth should put this book on her A list.”

—Henci Goer, author of The Thinking Woman’s Guide to a Better Birth

The Official Lamaze Guide is a source of information that women need to have and a message that women need to hear. I think it accomplishes its purpose skillfully and has the potential to be a transformative influence. I hope women read it, absorb it, and begin to celebrate birth!”

—Molly Remer, MSW, CCCE

Reading this book is like conversing with loving, knowledgeable friends. By being so gently, matter-of-factly certain about the "elegance" of the birthing process, Lothian and DeVries strongly counter today's obstetric fear-mongering and the non-stop "medicalization" of birth.
The authors provide a calm, strengthening atmosphere, blending physiological facts with practical advice and the wisdom of experience. They encourage women to apply to their labors the strengths they acquire while meeting life's challenges. They connect childbearing to the whole of women's lives.
Positive childbirth stories abound. The authors suggest that woman-to-woman conversations are especially important, and advise carefully listening to others' experiences -- how have other labors and births unfolded, where did they flow. or not flow, and why? Pay careful attention to what is said, and what is not said, the feelings that exist beneath the words.
Readers are referred, among other sites and publications, to The Maternity Center Association's useful website (now called The Childbirth Connection) and its literature, to birth advocacy groups, and to midwifery organizations.
This book is rare in its wholehearted support of natural birth. It reclaims the word "natural," which has been so scapegoated and abused. It's one of the books I'd recommend, along with Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth, to young women as a necessary part of their learning about pregnancy and childbirth. And it's a breath of fresh air to all of us so passionately concerned with the well-being of women and their babies.

At last!!! Here is a book that illuminates the miracle of what a woman's body does throughout pregnancy and birth in a wise and human way. It presents powerful, evidence-based information that explains and supports a woman's ability to give birth: it honors and celebrates this ability with the inclusion of wonderful birth stories. The book is informational and inspiring in equal measure, has a pleasing format and is movingly written. It's a first in its honesty, and the first book you should read about pregnancy and birth. I recommend this book with complete "confidence" that you will recommend it, too!!!

I wish this book had been available during my first pregnancy! First time mothers are naturally filled with fear--mostly of the unknown. What will happen? Will it be as painful as they say? Will I get through it? This book would have alleviated those fears. In a simple way, it tells you what will happen and how you can get through it. But, most importantly it tells you over and over again not only that you can do it, but that you were made to do it. Buy this book. It will be the best gift you can give your baby and yourself.

This is a wonderful book with natural approach to birth. I don't quite understand the negative comments saying the book is against interventions and pro-natural, and not about breathing techniques - when ordering a Lamaze book you should know what Lamaze means - Lamaze is NOT (and has not been for many years) all about breathing. It supports natural birth with as little interventions as possible as they conflict with the process of birth. And YES Lamaze is backed by research data - all available to view in the Cochrane Library - there are hundreds of studies scientifically backing every single word. And a complaint that it didn't teach them what to do in labor is completely ridiculous - no book will teach you what to do in labor - books broaden your horizons and give you information. If you want to learn specific comfort techniques take a childbirth class, hire a doula or both. The book does what it should and much more - it provides unbiased, current, evidence-based information which helps you while making informed decisions when you're in labor. It helps your confidence by reminding you that labor and birth are natural and it teaches you to trust your body and instincts. It's a wonderful book. I highly recommend to everyone who wants to be in charge of their birth and especially to those who want to have a natural, un-medicated birth.

This book is great-- I picked it up at the beginning of my pregnancy when I was looking for information on having a natural birth. This book spells everything out in clear language and provides information on both medicalized and natural, normal births. So many birth guides out there leave a lot to the imagination when it comes to discussing having a birth without medical intervention-- the Lamaze Guide delivers the pros and cons in extensive detail. I recommend this book to every pregnant woman and women trying to conceive. It sheds a new light on what you *thought* you knew about pregnancy and childbirth.
