Billie-Jo Barker, one third of the Barker triplets, is back in town and she's not that happy about it. With her professional hockey career cut short by injury she has slunk back into town with nothing to her name but a small nest egg and her equipment. Her relationship with one of her other sisters, Bobbi, is strained and she has no idea where her life is headed now.

When she sees a local hockey tournament sign up sheet she instantly decides to join regardless of her health and past injuries. The men in town aren't fond of the idea though and they go out of their way to tell her. Now, I don't know much about hockey myself but these men were downright cruel. Billie handles the jabs quite well but I have to wonder how much of these attitudes are true and why if they are she'd want to subject herself to it. The men even resort to getting physical in a non physical tournament.

Logan didn't realize that the sporty Barker sister had grown up quite so nicely. He's instantly attracted to her but his past with who he thinks is her popular sister Betty leaves him in a gray area and he isn't sure how to proceed. As Billie and Logan get closer each will have to come clean about past transgressions. I would have liked a bit more evolution to their relationship. The sex is great and the tension is well done but everything seemed to turn for them quickly. They were declaring their love and that was that. More courtship would have been better suited for this one. In fact Logan doesn't get much of a say at all. Most everything is from Billie's perspective and I wish I would have gotten more from him. More face time and more understanding. He's there but because we don't get much from his perspective he's kept on the back burner and becomes almost a secondary character.

I though the story would be an uplifting account of a woman discovering her strengths after suffering a sports injury.

Instead this book spends 50% of the first few chapters setting the scene for its trilogy. We're introduced to a myriad of caricature chick lit cardboard cut outs characters, a surfeit of angst and lust before we've finished reading the first chapter and a lackluster tale.

I'm assuming the author intends to publish 3 books based on a set of triplets called Billy-Jo, Betty-Jo and Bobbi-Jo. This isn't a joke- that's really their names. The hillbillies are aware of their unfortunate name hence I thought, perhaps not all is lost. However, their constant irrational fighting was ridiculous and tedious. Even teens would be embarrassed by such immature conduct.

It's also pretty incestuous and weird. Bobbi or Betty had a fling of some sort with the hero, Logan. But now he's pursuing the heroine. While Shane (a former beau of Bobbi or Betty) is chatting up Billi-Jo. Charming.

Billy-Jo and the hero (in the first few chapters) rarely spare a word to each other but we can't have a scene without one or the other thinking how hot his/her bits are. And yes, Logan Forrest is really hot. He's the tall, dark handsome cliche that's found in every chick lit, but other than that he doesn't seem to possess much personality, intelligence or witty banter. The dialogue was dry, the story dragged and the fighting was over the top.

There's also all these evil background characters who seem to be solely placed as a foil to make the hero (and the next installment of hero's) look good. The worst being Seth Longford, who is not only a pale, short and ugly comparison to our tall, dark handsome hero, but is sexist, crude and resembles a spiteful 14 year old.

Billie-Jo Barker has come home after an injury cut short her hockey career in Sweden, all she ever wanted to do was play hockey so she is not sure what she wants to do with her life. Unfortunately she comes home to an angry sister, a father that is slowly losing his battle with Alzheimer's and Logan a man she has loved all her life who still thinks of her as a kid.

While getting her skates sharpened, Billie-Jo hears about a Friday night hockey league and decides this might help with her feelings about her career. However sighing up for the team does not go over well with the town, it seems most on the team do not want a girl to play no matter how many medals she has to prove how good she is. Logan is the only one that thinks it will be fun to have an ex-pro on the team and champions her cause. Not only is she stirring up trouble in this small town, she also has to deal with her sister Bobbi-Jo who has been angry for years, feeling like she was left behind when her two sisters took off for greener pastures and she has had to deal with their father.

Logan and Billie-Jo are also dealing with issues, he has a past with the other triplet, Betty-Jo and spent a steamy night with her back in high school and as Billie-Jo and Logan get closer he is not sure how to say anything to her. And Billie-Jo is not sure how to tell Logan she has loved him forever. They become close as they battle the town's bullies who are making Billie-Jo's life a nightmare trying to get her to quit the team.

Offside is a wonderfully fun story that turns a town upside down when some want to challenge the status quo. I loved the characters, Logan and Billie-Jo had great chemistry and I truly enjoyed the secondary characters. The other two sisters both have stories coming up and there is bound to be more angst and romance as the sparks fly between them and they try to repair their damaged relationship while finding their own true loves.
