Product Description

This October, David Crowder*Band delivers their first Christmas record Oh For Joy. Featuring the Christmas favorites "Joy To the World," "The First Noel," "Oh Holy Night," "Silent Night" and more, the album features classic Christmas songs interpreted as only the David Crowder*Band can. Highlighting the band's unmistakable creativity and originality, Oh For Joy finds the band re-inventing familiar Christmas songs into something new and unexpected.

About the Artist

Named among the "most thoughtful, progressive and exciting acts in contemporary Christian music" by The New York Times, the popular yet unconventional David Crowder*Band released their latest GRAMMY ® nominated album Church Music in 2009 fall which debuted at No. 1 on the Christian retail chart scanning over 35,000 units. This gave David Crowder*Band their largest street week to date ranking in at No. 11 on the Billboard Top 200. David Crowder*Band's latest music video for "SMS (Shine)" nabbed coverage on NBC's The Today Show, Fox & Friends, USA Today, Billboard and Paste Magazine online as well as a GMA Dove Award win for "Short Form Video of the Year." The video was also recognized at the LA Film Festival in 2011. Along with the group's 9 GMA Dove Awards and 22 nominations, the band was the first Christian artist to be named MSN.com's Artist of the Year in 2006. The band is part of the Passion Movement, participating in university student gatherings in the US and around the world. The group's leader David Crowder is further an acclaimed author, having penned two books, including his acclaimed, highly personal, Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven, But Nobody Wants to Die: Or (The Eschatology of Bluegrass). The band recently announced that they are disbanding after the fall 2011 tour, and is currently working on their final album to be released in January 2012.

Iv'e pretty much listened to David Crowder Band since they started out, and it is about time they come out with a Christmas album. When I heard they were on their last tour as a band I almost cried (I have not yet seen them live as I lived in Spain until recently, thankfully I get to see them next sunday).
All the songs have a Christ centered message that just makes me want to worship God for his awesomeness. The musical quality is always top-notch. I love how they experiment with different sounds and instruments. I would say that they are the most creative band I listen to (both Christian and secular).
I especially loved Carol of the Bells. It is such a great song to start with, and I think that DCB did well making it their own.

Thank you for another amazing album.

A long-time David Crowder fan, I've always loved his fun renditions of songs and his implementation of alternative instruments. I was incredibly excited for this album (and it shipped to me in one day, despite only paying for standard shipping!) and let me tell you - not disappointed at all.

A few highlights...

The album opens with Joy to the World, and a great rendition of it at that. The musical composition of the song is wonderful - it really is a joyous song. Crowder sticks to the original tunes of the songs, but the instrumental backgrounds are of the likes I have never heard from any other artist or Christmas album.

Angels We Have Heard on High has the Crowder bluegrass feel, much like you'd recognize from "I Saw the Light" off of A Collision (or 3+4=7). Such a fun rendition of a song normally done over and over by different artists that all sound more or less the same.

O Holy Night has the more traditional feel to it, but when I hear it and close my eyes, all I can feel is Christmas. It has a great buildup, too, and ends in a culmination of a very powerful, "O night divine; O night, o night divine!"

Silent Night is wonderful. The majority of the song is the live audience singing while Crowder leads instrumentally. It's soft, beautiful, and mysterious, echoing the awe and wonder of the birth of Christ.

Finally, Carol of the Bells is absolutely PHENOMENAL. Crowder talks for a minute or so in the beginning, and then the song breaks into an alternative, rock, instrument-only rendition of this classic. I can't explain it in words - I only advise you listen to a preview. This song alone is probably worth purchasing the entire album (although, I'd probably say that for each song on the record).

I love the music played by the David Crowder Band. I was familiar with their rendition of "Joy to the World" but hadn't heard the other songs. So, when I heard this album was available, I wanted it.

Since I use a download-limited, satellite dish for internet access, downloading the mp3 digital tracks was not an option. So, I opted for ordering the CD, and I'm glad I did as I can now take the CD with me when I travel.

I have a quibble or two with their song selections (I've never liked Go Tell it on the Mountain and I *really* like What Child is This, but such is life!), but every song sounds exactly like you would expect a DC*B Christmas album to sound like.

In particular, we love their version of Joy to the World. This song has always felt 'overplayed' to me, but the DC*B version is just outstanding, breathing life back into the song for me. In addition, 'Oh Holy Night', 'O Come, O Come, Emmanuel', and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra-esque 'Carol of the Bells' are all fabulous. In particular, their Carol of the Bells rendition sets them apart. While sounding similar to something you would hear at a Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert, the smaller, and frankly better David Crowder Band shines brighter, plays louder, and is simply more fun. Having been to several DC*B concerts, I can imagine the band hopping and jumping around while performing that piece.

My only other complaint is that the album is too short! With the band's retirement imminent, it is such a shame that we *only* have these 8 songs.

This is a must have addition for anyone's Christmas music collection. In fact I can't think of any other album of Christmas songs I'd *actually* listen to at any other time of the year (to be honest, it's also the only one I will likely listen to during Christmas season too)!

Great Christmas CD in a way that only the David Crowder Band can do. My only complaint is that it was not longer, but still the whole family enjoys it and I am sure you will to. The lower price compensates for the shortness of the CD.

I find this album like many of this Band's previous works, creative, thoughtful, and a absolute joy to listen to.

"Carol Of The Bells" itself is worth buying this album.

"Joy To The World" is a cool rendition with the electronics used, something that was different, calm and fresh. Few other songs are made in the Southern style that David Crowder is known to putting "I see The Light", etc.

A must buy album if you're a David Crowder fan.

The first time I listened to the CD I was disappointed. But I don't think I was listened carefully, because now I really like it. I call it a true David Crowder Band CD because a lot of times I love his music, but sometimes he slips into a style or tempo or whatever that I don't like. So, this CD has some music that I love and some that I don't like as much. The song that I keep going to is their rendition of Silent Night. I love the end when the guitar solo starts out slow and then the tempo slowly picks up and then a banjo is added and so on. Awesome. I don't think I ever appreciated a version of Silent Night so much.
