About the Author

W. David Baird is Dean Emeritus of Seaver College and Howard A. White Professor of History at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. He is the author of The Story of Oklahoma (with Danney Goble) and Quest for Distinction: Pepperdine University in the 20th Century.

Danney Goble (1946–2007) was Professor of Letters at the University of Oklahoma and the award-winning author or coauthor of eight books about Oklahoma and Oklahomans.

Seaver College Dean Emeritus W. David Baird came to Pepperdine as the Howard A. White Professor of History in 1988 and served as Seaver Dean from 1998 to 2008. Baird holds degrees in history and geography and has written or edited 11 books and numerous articles, most on the history of the American West and Native Americans. A native of Oklahoma, Baird and his wife, Jane, have lived in Malibu since 1988.

This is the best treatment of Oklahoma history that I have seen. I enjoyed the stories that made it feel more personal. It was worthwhile for my daughter's homeschool Oklahoma history class. Unfortunately, it still was rather boring for the first half, but still much better than the Oklahoma history textbook I had in school. It does tackle some of the uglier aspects of our history, which I appreciated.

I ordered this book in anticipation of moving to Oklahoma and teaching Oklahoma History at the high school level. Baird and Goble do a nice job of covering the various periods of the state's history including the pertinent facts as well as including illustrative and entertaining anecdotes. I have learned a lot more about the state than anticipated and am looking forward to living and working in such a fascinating place. On a side note, in the appendix is a section entitled "See History for Yourself" which includes trips to historic sites throughout the state. I look forward to planning and visiting as many of the these sites as possible.
